Abstract

1,133,622. Tetrahedral packages. GENERAL FOODS CORP. 9 Dec., 1965 [23 Dec., 1964], No. 52397/65. Heading B8C. A container 10a in the shape of an irregular tetrahedron, each face of which represents a right triangle, is formed from a strip 51 of material which is drawn over a guide 52 to envelop a hollow mandrel 53. A sealing device 54, which may be a heated platen or a pressure applying means depending on whether the material 51 has an inner coating of heat sealing substance or pressure sensitive adhesive respectively, forms the material into a tube. Sealing jaws 55a, 55b, 55c, 55d, which may or may not be heated depending on the nature of the material 51, are mounted along the length of the tube. Jaws 55c, 55d and 55a, 55b make angles of 24 and 156 degrees respectively with the normal to the longitudinal axis of the tube and alternate jaws form seals in planes perpendicular to each other. After making a first seal and filling a container with a product poured through the hollow mandrel, the second seal is effected to close the container. Individual filled containers are obtained by severing along the second seal at its mid point. Four containers may be stacked to form a cube having open portions. By mounting jaws 55a, 55c at their complementary angles additional containers 30a may be formed, two of which are used to fill the open portions of the cube. The containers are made from paper, paperboard, metal foil &c.
