A container, Fig. 10, is made from a blank of flexible material longitudinally heat-sealed at 16, the resulting tube being transversely sealed at 18, filled, and sealed at 20 to close it, thereby producing the container of Fig. 4 Which is then applied to a support member 26, Fig. 6, in order to form flaps 28, 30 subsequently folded inwards and sealed. In forming the base the weight of the contents is sufficient to deform the tube walls, and the flaps 28, 30 which are folded in as the support member 26 is withdrawn, are sealed by a separate strip 32, Fig. 9. The tube may be extruded instead of being formed from a blank. A straw 22 may be inserted in the tube at the time of filling. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the flaps 28, 30 are turned outwards and sealed to the container side wall. Alternatively, Fig. 15 (not shown), the end flaps may be turned out to form basal flanges, heat-sealed over their surfaces in that position, and trimmed, thereby making the container more stable. The top seam 20 may be scored or weakened to provide entry to the container. The container may be formed of separate plies of plastics material and paper, which may be laminated, Figs. 18- 23 (not shown). The material of the container may be transparent or translucent.
