Abstract

986,087. Packages; cartons. C. E. PALMER. Oct. 9, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 39766/63. Headings B8C and B8P. A package, Fig. 8, comprises a carton 100 having a window aperture 120 and a tray 122, Fig. 10, made of transparent plastics which when filled is placed in the carton such that its planar base 124 is adjacent wall 102 in which the window is formed. The tray 122 is held erect by tongue-and-slot connections 134, 138 and at two opposite ends is provided with arcuate slots 142 delimiting flaps 144 which co-operate with dust flaps 116, 118 of carton 100 to rigidify the package and render it substantially tamperproof. In a second embodiment, Fig. 1, several trays with contents 4 are contained within a carton 2. In this embodiment the tray side walls are only about one-third the height of the carton and the goods are held within the tray by a transparent plastics wrapper 38 which may be heat-sealed or otherwise adhered to the tray or may be a complete overwrap which is sealed to itself or a tubular cover heat-shrunk on to the tray and contents. The tray of this embodiment may be as described in Specification 906,075. Other embodiments show various window formations and tray arrangements within the carton. The carton may be made of plastics, metal foils or laminates thereof, but is preferably of paperboard and, among the plastics mentioned as suitable for the tray are biaxially oriented polystyrene and polyethylene and for the wrapper 38, cellulose acetate and rubber hydrochloride.
