Abstract

A package comprises at least one article 3, 4 and a base member 1 which are shrink-wrapped 5 as a unit, and a display carton 6 in which the unit fits having an aperture 7 to enable the article(s) 3, 4 to be viewed. The carton 6 and base member 1 may be of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material. The unit 1, 3, 4, 5 may fit in its desired position solely by its direct engagement with the inside of the carton. The articles may be an Easter egg 3 and chocolate bars 4.

Description

"Packaging" This invention relates to a package comprising a display carton and at least one article contained therein. By a "display carton we mean a carton made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material and formed with at least one opening in a wall or walls thereof to enable the said article to be viewed by a purchaser.
It is important that the article in such a package should be securely located in a desired position therein, so that it can be seen to best advantage by a purchaser as just mentioned. This means that if the article is smaller than the space inside the carton, as is often the case, some structure must be provided for holding it in its desired position. It is known to achieve this by means of a cardboard supporting structure, which may or may not be an extension of the body of the carton itself, i.e. part of the same blank.
However such a structure has to be fairly complicated, particularly if the article concerned is not of a simple shape or if more than one article is involved. Such a supporting structure has also been formed from relatively stiff transparent plastics sheet material, which may at the same time form a window in the said opening in the carton wall, but the use of such a material, particularly in the comparatively large quantity necessary to adequately support an article and, possibly, to form a window as well, is not desirable from an environmental point of view.
According to the present invention there is provided a package comprising a display carton made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material and at least one article housed in said carton, wherein the said at least one article and a base member are shrink wrapped as a unit which fits in the said carton in a desired position.
With such an arrangement the said at least one article is held in a desired position in the carton relative to a display opening therein, simply by being held to the said base member by the shrink wrap and by virtue of the unit thus formed fitting in the carton in a predetermined position. The base member may be of a simple structure, as compared with the relatively complicated internal structures previously employed to locate an article in a carton without the help of shrink wrap. Although the shrink wrap is of course of plastics, the plastics content thereof can be almost negligible compared with that of the relatively stiff transparent sheet material sometimes previously used as locating means.
The said base member may be made of any suitable inexpensive lightweight material. Expanded polystyrene is one possibility. Preferably however it is made of cardboard, paperboard or the like, like the carton itself.
In one form of the invention more than one said unit, each comprising at least one shrink wrapped article and a base member, could be provided to fit together in the carton. Preferably however the carton has only one said unit fitting therein. Such a unit could be located in its desired position in the carton with the aid of one or more additional packing pieces.
Preferably however the said unit fits in the carton in its desired position solely by its direct engagement with the inside of the carton.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a base member; Figure 2 is a plan view of a unit comprising the base member of Figure 1 and three articles, all shrink wrapped together; Figures 3 and 4 are an end view and a side view respectively of the unit of Figure 2; and Figure 5 is a perspective view of a package comprising a display carton containing the unit of Figures 2 to 4.
The base member of Figure 1 is an inverted cardboard tray 1 formed with an oval aperture 2. In the unit of Figures 2 to 4 an easter egg 3 rests in the aperture 2, two chocolate bars 4 are placed alongside it on the surface of the base member, and the resulting combination is shrink wrapped in plastics film 5 to form the unit. The base member is dimensioned to be a close sliding fit in a display carton 6 (Figure 5) having a display aperture 7 in its front wall 8, so that when the carton is closed as shown the shrink wrapped unit is held against sideways and up and down movement by its close engagement with the side walls 9 and the top and bottom walls 10 of the carton. Furthermore the unit is held against forward movement by a curved region 11 of the front wall 8 of the carton which is displaced inwardly to partially embrace the front surface of the easter egg 3, such displacement being about a reverse fold line 12 in the front wall and a fold line 13 in the side wall 9. Thus a package 4 is formed in which the easter egg 3 and the chocolate bars 4 are clearly visible to a purchaser by way of the display aperture 7 in the carton 6, but are securely held against movement relative to the carton by means of the shrink wrap, and the close fit of the base member in the carton.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1. A package comprising a display carton made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material and at least one article housed in said carton, wherein the said at least one article and a base member are shrink wrapped as a unit which fits in the said carton in a desired position.
  2. 2. A package as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said base member is also made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material.
  3. 3. A package as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the carton has only one said unit fitting therein.
  4. 4. A package as claimed in claim 3, wherein the said unit fits in the carton in its desired position solely by its direct engagement with the inside of the carton.
  5. 5. A package as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
