Description

W. W. MILLER April 28, 1942.
CARTON I Filed July 25, 1940 y P E m M :0 Ml? 4 Patented Apr. 28, 1942 OFFICE 2,281,165 clmron William W. Miller, Middletown, Conn. Application July 25, 1940, Serial No. 347,391
1 Claim.
My invention relates to the class of receptacles commonly called cartons and particularly to that class of cartons which are partially open for display of the contents, the open side being closed by transparent material through which the contents may be seen, and an object of my invention, among others, is the production oi a carton of this type provided with means for supporting the transparent material in a smooth condition when separated from the contents therein; and a further object of the invention is the production of a carton that, may be conveniently and compactly folded when not in use.
One form of a carton embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a face view of a blank embodying my invention and from which my improved carton may be formed.
Figure 2 is an isometric view showing the blank partially folded but with the window supports in a raised position.
Figure 3 is an isometric view showing the carton folded for storage.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the carton opened out and containing articles on display therein.
Figure 5 is a view of a blank embodying a slight modification of the invention.
Figure 6 is an isometric view similar to Fig. 2 and showing the blank partially folded into carton form.
Figure 7 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showingthe completed carton containing articles for display therein.
Figure 8 is a bottom view of one end of the carton shown as partially folded.
Figure 9 is an isometric view of one end of a flaps l3 extend from each end of the bottom portion 8, said supporting end flaps being folded on the dotted lines l4 and at the ends of these flaps I3 window supporting flaps I! are located.
In the formation of a carton from this blank the side folds 9 are up-folded on the dotted lines It to produce sides it of the carton the end flaps II at the ends 01' the sides of the blank being folded on the dotted lines ii to produce end flaps ll of the carton. The supporting end flaps it are then folded on the dotted lines It to produce ends l8 of the carton. The end flaps l3 of the blank are rounded on their outer extremities as at l9 to constitute a form to give shape to window supports 2| for a transparent sheet or window 22. The carton is wrapped in this transparent material and the supports 2| enable the sheet to be wrapped in a smooth unwrinkled and uncreased condition and in spaced relation to the contents of the carton without sinking thereon, as it is desirable that the transparent sheet shall not touch the contents.
When arranged for packing and storage the carton is folded on the dotted lines 23 obliquely relatively disposed to form crimps 24 in the bottom of the carton, and the latter has told 39 creased on the dotted line 25 of the blank, and
the latter may be scored or creased to provide for such formation as desired or the crimps and crease may be otherwise formed as deemed best.
That mm oi the carton shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive is substantially the same as that just described with the exception that the rorms III of the first described carton are dispensed with and the window supports it are bent on the dotted lines ii at the ends of end flaps 28 of the blank. With these exceptions the two forms of the blank and the cartons folded therefrom are substantially alike;
In that form or the carton shown in Figure 9 is illustrated a carton similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2, the only dhierence being that instead of the end flaps Ell] inside of the carton of Figures 1 and 2, flaps as are iormed with notched interlocks M to engage each other outside of the carton. Otherwise the two structures are the same.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of oper-- ation of my invention together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
I claim:
A carton formed of a one-piece blank including a bottom section, side sections to be bent upwardly from the bottom section, end flaps ateach end of the side sections, bottom section 2 I at end flap at opposite sides thereot having an in'- wardly extending notch, a fold line between saidnotches defining at the end of each flap an integral windowsupporting flap, the outer sides of the notches of each flap being straight and alined, and the inner side of each notch being.
convexly curved and in operative position defining a curved support for the window supporting flap.
