Description

A. J. TANNER FOLDER OR CQNTAINER April 22, 1930.
Filed May 28 1.928
Patented Apr. 22, v 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ARNOLD J. TANNER, OF NORTH HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 THEODORE H. LOW, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT FOLDER OR CONTAINER Application filed May 28,
The present invention relates to folders or containers useful for packing merchandise of certain kinds, for example, handkerchiefs, hosiery and the like which are packed in comparatively shallow containers. The object of the invention is to produce a simple and efiicient container useful both for packing and displaying the contents thereof.
The folder made in accordance with this. invention is composed of a single sheet of material, preferably paper board and the blank therefor is cut and scored so that it can be easily assembled to form an enclosing folder for the merchandise to be contained therein without gluing any part thereof.
a In carrying out one embodiment of the invention, the folder is constructed and arranged as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the folder in its closed position- Figure 2 is a plan View of the folder in its open position; v p
Figure 3 is a plan View of the blank from which the folder is constructed, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view showing a fragment of the folder.
Referring to the said drawings, the folder is made of a one piece blank such as 1 and this blank has the main or body portion 2 having lateral extensions or side wings 3 and end extensions or flaps 4 and 5. Said blank is scored as represented by broken lines 6 so that said flaps and side wings may be folded to form the completed folder consisting of the receptacle or container part, the folding flap for closing the folder and a pocket to receive said flap.
In the operation of folding the improved device, the wings 3 are folded inwardly and the ends 7 of the flap 5 are also turned inwardly to be in alignment with the folded wings 3. When so folded, the flap 5 is turned inwardly so that the turned in ends will rest on top of the folded end wings or flanges 3 of the main portion 1. In this position, the edges 8 of the turned in ends 7 can be engaged under the tongues 9 formed in the side I wings or flanges 3. The folder is now com pletely set up to receive the goods and to 1928. Serial No. 231,059.
close the folder, the flap 4 is tucked into the pocket which is formed between the flap 5 and the turned in ends 7. It will be noted that in no way, is the passage of this flap hindered by interference of any projections or raised surfaces standing in its path of travel.
It will be understood that in some cases, to simplify packing the contents may be first laid on the central or main portion 1 and then the container can be folded around the contents so as not to disarrange the same, in the case of a handkerchief made of delicate fabric, for example.
The improved folded has obvious advantages as regards the packing of merchandise. It also has advantages as a display medium for it may be shown with the closing flap in the open position and, if desired, this flap can be folded back so as to operate as a supporting easel to hold the folder in a raised angular position.
Considerable variance arises in the designing of packing and display containers for different kinds of merchandise and. therefore, to meet the requirements, modifications of the construction and application of the invention hereinbefore described may be made and it is to be understood any modification coming fairly within the terms of the appended claims shall be covered thereby.
I claim 1. A container of the class described comprising a body section; inwardly folding flanges at the sides of said-body section extending substantially along the full length thereof; a covering flap extending from the bottom end of said body section arranged to fold and to be secured on said body section to form a separate pocket lying over said flanges and a closing flap extending from the top end of said body section adapted to fold and slide into said pocket to close the container.
2. A container of the class described comprising a body section; inwardly folding flanges at the sides of said body section extending substantially along the full length thereof; a covering flap extending from the bottom end of said body section arranged to fold on said body section to form a separate pocket lying over said flanges; a closing flap extending from the top end of said body section adapted to fold and slide into said pocket to close the container; and means located at the sides of said body section, clear. of the path of said closing flap, for retaining said covering flap in its Operative position.
3. A container as described comprising a receptacle having inwardly flanged side walls, a lower flap folding on said receptacle over said flanged side walls; said flap closing the bottom end of said receptacle and forming a pocket separate from'said receptacle; an upper flap providing means for closing the top end of said receptacle; said upper flap being received and held within said pocket in the closing position and means for retaining said lower flap in the folded position over said receptacle.
Signed at New Haven, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut this 26 day of May, 1928.-
ARNOLD J. TANNER.
