Description
March 14, 1933. w. s. KINKEAD l,901,036
GARTON Filed July 20, 1929 mmm Patentecl Mar. 14, 1933 iee WILLIAM S. KINKEAD, OF CI-IICAGO, ILLINOIS Application filed July 20,
The present invention relates to a paper carton and mor-e particularly, to a carton for containing seam bindmg and edgng 'for iinoleum in which the carton is so construct ed as to receive and contain therein a circular bo:: of tacks through an apertnre in the center of the carton proper.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved paper carton for the purpose of containing therein and periodically dispensing therefrom, a seam binding and edging for linoleum and the iilre, as the same is used and to also provide therein, a crcnlar opening in `Lhe top located concentrically in the center of the rolled bincling and edgng material for receiving a separate and distinct circular paper car-ton which is adapted to contain tacks.
These and other objects are accomplished by providing a Construction and an arrangement of the various parts in the manner hereinafter described and particularly ponted out in the appended claim. i
Beferring to the drawing, Fig. 1 isa perspective view 'of my improved carton showing the same set up for display. i
Fig; 2 is a top plan View of'the carton showing a portion of the same in crosssection.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevational View' of the carlon shown in Fig. 1. i
Fig. is a fiat plan form of the carton. Fig; E is a perspective View of the internal box or carton which is adapted to fit snugly within the cart-on shown in Fg. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a top plan View of the blank which goes to form the internal carton shown in Fig. 5.
In illustrating one form of my invention, I have shown the'same in connection with a display type of folding carton which comprises a bottom member 10, a top menber 11,
joined together by a side portion 12. Formed integrally with the top portion are two end portion members 13 which are provided with suitable tongues 14. Formed integrally with and on one side of the top portion 11 is a display portion 15 which is cut on a semicircle as shown at 16 and scored as shown at 17 for' the purpose of folding it over and 1929. SerialNo. 3793361 securing it in position, shownin Fig. 1, on which any display advertising' may be placed. The side portion 12 is provided with a verticalslot 18 adjacent one end thereof, and a cutaway portion as shown at 19 for the purpose of permitting the binding or edging to extend therethrough for dispensing the samefron the carton. The top portion 11 is provided with a circular aperture as shown at 20, for the purpose hereinafter set forth. The bottom portion 10 is provided with a narrow side portion 21 which in turn, has formed integrally therewith, a flap or tongue 22. The flap or tongue 22 is cut on arcs of small circle as shown at 23, for the purpose of engaging the bent over portion 2 1 of the display portion oi' the card, as clean. ly shown in Fig. 3. Adapted to be mounted within the display carton is an internal carton, igenerally indicated by the reference character 25 and which is preferably made of a slightly heavier cardboard than the outside carton. This carton is similarly pro* Vided with a top portion 26 and a lower portion 27 which are joined together by a side portion 28. This sideportion 28 is provided with a slot 29 adjacent one end thereof, and is adapted to register with the slot 18 in the outside carton. This inside carton is also` provided with a cutaway portion 30, which 8 is adapted to register with the cutaway portion 19 of the outside carton. This internal carton is provided with suitable fiaps, shown at 31 and 32 for the respective top and bottom portions, for holding the box securely in position. The top portion 26 is provided with ,a circular aperture, as shown at 33, which is adapted to register with the aperture 20 in the outside car -ton for thepurpose of receiving a circular paper carton or box 34: therein, which .comprises two telescopically receiving members of the Construction well known in the paper box industry. Mounted in this circular carton are the nsual tacks or nails 35 which are usedin connection with securing the binding or edging to' the floor. Mounted concentrically within the inner carton and about the paper circular box 34 'are coils of edging or binding material 36 which has the outer or freeend thereof extending through the aligned cutaway Slots 30 and 19, respectively, of the inner and outside cartons. The free or loose end, as shown at 37, is adapted to extend through the slots 18 and 29 respectively, of each of the outside and inside cartons, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the upper portion of the carton of tacks 34, protrudes slightly above the top ll of the outside carton so as to prevent the carton from lateral displacement with the apertures 20 and 33 of the respective outer and inner cartons so that the carton of tasks may be readily grasped between the fingers and withdraWn for use. i
From the above description, it will binding from the carton, the free end 37 may be Withdrawn from the slot 18 of the carton and pulled out throughthe cutaway portion 19, until the proper length has been withdrawn, after which the same may be severed and the free end then again inserted in the slot 18 so as to retain the edging or binding within the carton. It will also, be noted that by providing an opening in the carton, as shown at 20 and 33 of the respective outside and insidecartons, that the circular box of tacks 34 may be inserted or removed therefrom for use. This arrangement provides a very simple and efi'icient means for retaining and maintaining the tacks With the carton of bindng and edging so that all the mate- N rials necessaryfor the purpose are confined within a compact and neatly shaped box.
While in the above specication I have described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will, of course, be und-erstood that the same is capable of modification and that modification may be made without departing from the spirit and scope i of my invention as expressed in the following claim.
What I claim asmy invention and desre to secure by Letters Patent is: i
A container 'or sean binding and edging material comprising an internal and external carton, registering Slots in the side Walls of 'said cartons adj'acent one of the corners thereof and between the'edges of two adjacent side walls, there being additional registering Slots in an intermediate portion of the contiguous side walls of each carton for securing therein the-free end of the material, there-being re 'st-ering circular openings in thecenter of the tops of each of said cartons, and a circular' carton of tacks mounted in said openings and protruding above the tops ofsaid cartons for supporting and preventing the displacement of said bo:: of tacks.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, on this 18th day of July, A. D. 1929. i v
