This invention relates to wrappers or cartons. Objects of the invention are to provide an improved device that may be used satisfactorily as a wrapper or carton and, when used as a 5 wrapper, may enclose a package comprising a container and its contents, which contents may be exposed through an opening provided in .one wall of the wrapper by sliding a portion thereof to form said opening, and which may be simi- 1 larly employed to provide an opening for access to the contents when used as a carton proper; t-provide an improved closure for an opening through one wall of the wrapper or carton and a hinged device connecting. said closure with 15 another portidnpfthe wrapper or. carton by manipulation of which the closure may be'operated; and to provide improved means for guiding and retaining the closure in proper position.
Another object of the invention is to provide 20 a wrapper or carton embodying the improved features of construction and the advantages of operation herein disclosed, reference being made to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of our improved 25 wrapper or carton in complete assembly and closed.
Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view showing the closure for the opening at one end of the wrapper or carton in position to provide said 30 opening to permit access to the contents.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the improved wrapper or carton is formed.
As shown, in Fig. 4, the blank is a unitary member shaped so that, when folded along appropriate lines or pivotal connections, the sections thereof will form the different walls of the wrapper or carton. Specifically, the blank includes at one end a wall section I integrally connected with an opposite wall section 2 by a relatively narrow end wall section 3 which is defined from the wall section I by a fold or score line 4 and from the wall section 2 by a fold or score line 5.
45 Attaching portions 6 and 'l are integrally connected with the ends of the wall sections I and 2, respectively, and defined therefrom by fold or score lines 8 and 9.
The wall section I is integrally connected with 50 and defined from a wall section II) by a fold or score line II; the wall section III. is integrally connected with and defined from a wall section I2 by a fold or score line l3; the wall section I2 is integrally connected with and defined from a 55 wall section I4, matching the wall section I0, by a fold or score line I5; and the wall section I4 is integrally .connected with and defined from a wall section comprising strips I6 and I! by a fold or score lin'el'l8. The strips I6 and H are pivotally connected by a fold line or hinge I9. The opposite ends, respectively, of the wall sections I, I0, -I2,I4, I6 and H are in alinement. That end of the strip I! which is in alinement with the corresponding end of the wall section I is integrally connected with a wall section 28 by a fold or score line H, and said wall section 20 is integrally connected with a tab 22 by a fold or score line 23.
- In assembling or forming this blank into a wrapper orcarton, the wall section I4 is folded along the line I5 to a position at right angles to the wall section I2; the composite wall secti'on coniprisingthe strips I6 and I1 is foldedto position: parallel with and opposite from the wall section I2 along the line I8; and the wall section 2% folded over toward the wall section I2 along the line 2|, and the tab 22 is folded downwardly against the inner side of the wall section I2. Thus, the wall section I2 and the composite wall sections I6 and I! are separated from each other by the width of the wall section I4 and of the wall section 20. Then, the wall section I0 is folded upwardly at right angles to the wall section l2 along the line I3 and against the edges of the strip I1 and the wall section 20; the wall section I is then folded over and against the outer surface of the strips I6 and IT. The narrow wall section 3 is folded over across the ends of the wall section I2 and the strip I6; the wall section 2 is folded along theline 5 against the wall section I2; and the attaching portions 6 and I are folded toward each other and in superimposed relationship and attached together.
Thus, the wall section I and the wall section comprising the strips I6 and H are relatively slidable, and the tab 22 holds the wall section 20 in proper position to close the opening 24 provided by the space 25 between the ends of the wall sections I and 2. The Wall section I may be formed with a notch 26 to permit engagement of the thumb or finger of the user with the strip I6 so as to move the connected portions IS, IT, 20 and 22 from the positions they occupy in Fig. 1 to the positions disclosed in Fig. 2 of the draw- As specifically shown, the device is used as a wrapper for a package 21 of cigarettes, the cigarettes being shown in their original wrapper or enclosure, which has been opened at one end so wall sections and the tab may be'again inserted as in Figs. 1 and 2.
From the foregoing it should be apparent that our improved wrapper or carton comprises the five walls I, 2, 3, i3 and H1 forming an enclosure;
that the wall 3 has an opening 24 for removal of contents from the enclosure; that the hinged wall I4 is provided for closing the open side oi the enclosure opposite from thewall 10; andthat the wall 20 is connected withithe hinged )Wall [4 through the parts I! and I6 and is movable, thereby to positions to close and to open the opening 24.
our improved, Wrapper 0r;carto1 l'v may be. made from different forms of blanksand'theone'shown is for purposes of illustration only. Thedevice may be applied to varioususesotherthan the uses specifically suggested, and-we do not restrict ourselves. in these or other unessential particulars, but what We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1, A wrapper or carton comprising five walls forming an enclosure open at. one side and one of said walls having an opening for removal of; contents from said enclosure, a hinged wall ior closing said open side of said enclosure, and a wall connected with-saidhinged: walland movable thereby to positions to close and to open, said opening. p, o,
2. A wrapper or carton'compri in anumber of attached walls forming an enclosure; open at one side and one of said walls having an opening therethrough for the removal of contents from said enclosure, a closure for said opening, and a. hinged wall closing said open side of said enclosure for moving said closure to and from position "will retain said last named wall in position to close said opening.v
4. A polygonal wrapper or carton comprising a series of integrally united walls forming an enclosure open at, oneside and one. of whichzwallsv has an opening into the enclosure to permitremoval of contents therefrom, and walls pivotally connected-with one of said walls and movable to positions. to open and to close said open side of said enclosure and said opening.
5. A wrapper. or carton comprising wall elements forming an enclosure open at one side and having an; opening through one of said. wall elements spaced from said open side, a hinged wall element for closing said open side, and awall in connection with said wall element and. operated thereby to positions to, closev and to open said openingwhen' said wall element .is operated to positions-t0 close and to. open said open sideof said enclosure. p o
