This invention relates to a case or carton and has special reference to a device having novel connection with the case or carton and operative to open and to close the same.

An object of the invention is to provide a device for use in connection with a case or carton and comprising a section of material having an opening intermediate of its ends adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the w inside of the case or carton so as to provide an opening through which articles may be removed from or placed in the case or carton.

Another object of the vinvention is to provide a case or carton adapted to contain cigarettes, or other articles, in combination with a section of material having its ends extending into the case or carton between the walls of the case or carton and the contents thereof, and being movable from position in which said section ofthe 2@ material closes the case or carton to position in which an opening through said section of material registers or communicates with the inside of the case or carton and provides an opening through which the contents of the case or carton may be removed.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved closure for a case or carton adapted to contain cigarettes, or other articles, and including an elongated section of material hav- 3@ ing its ends extended between the inside of the walls of the case or carton and the contents thereof and having a portion forming a closure for the case or carton and another portion having an opening adapted to be brought into registration with the open end of the case or carton to facilitate the removal of the contents.

Other objects will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view, with parts broken away, having my improved closure device in connection therewith and in closed position.

Fig. 2 is a similar perspective View showing the closure device in open position.

The case or carton shown is generally of conventional construction including two side walls 1 connected by a bottom wall 2 and side edge walls 3.

This case or carton is designed and adapted to receive and contain cigarettes 4, or other articles or substances, enclosed within a wrapper 5, in order to protect and preserve properly the contents thereof.

According to present practice cigarettes are thus enclosed or wrapped in a wrapper 5 and the wrapper 5 is enclosed in a case or carton of paper or other material folded to provide the lower end wall 2 and also folded to provide an opposite end wall and the entire case or carton is often wrapped in Cellophane or other protecting wrapper.

My present invention is designed and adapted to be used in connection with such cases or cartons, either in the original making of the package or applied thereto subsequently as an accessory after the end wall opposite from the end wall 2 has been torn 01T or removed and the ends of the cigarettes exposed by removal of that portion of the wrapper 5 extending across the ends of the cigarettes. The application of this invention to such a case or carton when the original package is made up, or subsequently as an accessory, should be apparent from a description of the device and the illustrated application thereof.

As shown my improved closure for the package comprises an elongated section of material including an end section 6, an opposite end section 7, a panel 8 in connection with the panel 7 along a hinge or score line 9 and connected with the panel 6 by a portion 10 having hinge connection 11 with the part 6 and hinge connection 12 with the panel 8.

An opening 13 is thus provided between adjacent edges of the parts 6 and 8. 'I'he distance between the hinge connections 11 and 12, which defines the width of the opening 13, is approximately equal to the distance between the sides of the Wrapper 5, so that when the opening 13 is brought into registration with the end of the case or carton a space extending the full width ofthe.

case or carton is provided through which any of the cigarettes or other articles may be removed. This closure device is applied to the case or carton by extending the parts 6 and 10 between one of the side walls 1 and the adjacent wrapper 5 and extending the panel 7 between the opposite side wall of the carton and the adjacent wrapper 5. This places the panel 8 across the open end of the case or carton forming a closure therefor and preventing access to the inside thereof.

The hinge connections 9, 11 and 12 facilitate manipulation and sliding of the closure device from the position shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4, in order to bring the opening 13 to the end of the case or carton and aiiord easy access to the contents thereof. Thus the closure device may be easily moved from closed to open position and vice' versa.

This improved closure device may be made of any appropriate material so long as there are bendable or flexible portionsusuch as the lines 9, 11 and 12, or the entire device may be made of sufliciently flexible material as to permit bending along any part thereof. l

'I'he closure device shown in Figs. 6 and 'I is of the same construction and form as the closure device already described but is applied to and held in cooperative relationship with the case or carton in a slightly different manner. The same reference numerals are applied to the parts of the case or carton and the closure device in Figs. 6 and 7 as are applied to similar parts in the preceding views of the drawings.

As shown in Figs. 6 and 'I a strip of material is wrapped around the case or carton to provide side walls 14 and connections 15 at the vertical edges of the case or carton. 'I'he closure device is applied to this case or carton by extending the portions 6 and 10 between one of the walls 1 and the wrapper wall 14 and extending the portion 7 between the opposite wall 1 and the adjacent wrapper wall 14, in which position the portion 8 extends across and closes the end of the case or carton. 'I'he closure device may be manipulated by withdrawing the portion 10 from between the walls 1 and 14 and sliding the portion 8 with the portion 7 downwardly between the opposite walls 1 and 14 and placing the opening 13 at the open end of the case or carton to permit removal or replacement of the contents. 'I'he wrapper 14 may be applied to the case or carton as an auxiliary or assembled in connectiontherewith before the merchandise is distributed.

In the modification of the device shown in Figs. 8 to 11 inclusive the closure device comprises a member including end sections 16 extending downwardly between the walls 1 and 5 or between the walls l and 14 as desired. The portions 16 are connected by an outer ply 1'1 and an inner ply 18. The plies 17 and 18 terminate short of one edge of the case or carton to leave an opening 19 similar to the opening provided by the space 13 when said space is at the open end of the case or carton. It is not intended that this device be slipped or slid longitudinally but it is intended that the device remain in a stationary adjustment so long as it is in connection with the case or carton to which it is applied.

The closure device for the opening 19'comprises a slide 20 extending into the space between position the slide 20 closes the opening 19but may easily be pushed or moved longitudinally from such closing position and into the space 21 between the plies 17 and 18 to open position in which easy access is afforded to the contents of the case or carton. This closure slide 20 is preferably formed with an upturned flange 22 along its outer or exposed end which may be easily engaged as a handle when it is desired to move the slide from open to closed position or vice versa.

Numerous other variations of the invention may be made in view of the foregoing suggestions.

It should now be apparent that this invention obtains all of its intended objects and purposes efiiciently, economically and satisfactorily, and may be easily applied to the case or carton at the original packaging of the material therein or may be subsequently applied as an accessory. I contemplate all of these uses and applications of the device and such other variations as may be within the scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A closure for a case or carton that has walls forming an enclosure open at one end, comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing the open end of said case or carton and having its opposite end portions extendirg downwardly for relative longitudinal sliding movements between the side walls and the contents of the case or carton and having an opening in an intermediate portion thereof adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton, when said end portions are slid in opposite directions, and hinges connecting said intermediate portion with said first named portion and with said end portions respectively.

2. A closure for a case or carton that has walls forming an enclosure and that has a wrapper or lining enclosing the contents, comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing the open end of said case or carton and having its opposite end portions extending downwardly for relative longitudinal sliding movements between said wrapper or lining and the side walls of the case or carton and having an opening in an intermediate portion thereof adapted to be brought 125 into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton to open and to close the same, when said end portions are slid in opposite directions, and hinges connecting said intermediate portion with said first named portion and 130 with said end portions respectively.

3. In a case or carton having side walls and an open end, a closure for said open end comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing said 135 open end and having its opposite end portions extending downwardly for relative longitudinal sliding movements adjacent the inner sides of the side walls of the case or carton and having an opening in an intermediate portion thereof 140 adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton when said closure is slid in opposite directions when said end portions are slid in opposite directions, and hinges connecting said interme- 145 diate portion with said rst named portion and with said end portions respectively.

4. A closure for a case or carton that has walls forming an enclosure, comprising a unitary sectiQn 0I material having a portion thereof extend- 150 ing across and closing one end of said case or carton and having its end portions extending downwardly adjacent to the inner surfaces of the side walls of said case or carton for endwise sliding movements and having an opening intermediate of its ends movable by said endwise sliding movements of said closure into and out of registration with the end of said case or carton, and hinge means connecting said end portions with said rst named portion.

5. A closure for a case or carton that has walls forming an enclosure open at one end, comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing the open end of said case or carton and having its opposite end portions extending downwardly for endwise sliding movements adjacent to the side walls of the case or carton and having an opening in an intermediate portion thereof adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton by said endwise sliding movements, and hinges connecting said end portions with said first named portion and said intermediate portion and said intermediate portion with said first named portion respectively.

6. A closure for a case or carton that has walls forming an enclosure open' at one end, comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing the open end of said case or carton and having its opposite end portions extending downwardly for endwise sliding movements adjacent to the side walls of the case or carton and havingv an opening in an intermediate portion thereof adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton by said endwise sliding movements, a. hinge connecting said first named portion and said intermediate portion, hinges connecting said end portions with said first named portion and said intermediate portion respectively, and means engaging said end portions of said section andguiding said portions in said endwise sliding movements of said section.

7. A closure for a case or carton that has walls forming an enclosure, comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing the open end of said case or carton and having its opposite end portions hinged to said rst vnamed portion extending downwardly along the side walls of said case or carton, means engaging said end portions and holding said section in proper relation to the case or carton, and means for providing an opening through said section to thc inside of the case or carton.

8. A closure for a case or carton that has outer side walls forming an enclosure open at one end comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across and closing the open end of said case or carton and having its opposite end portions extending downwardly for relative longitudinal sliding movements along the outer surfaces of said outer side walls and having an opening in an intermediate portion thereof adapted to be brought into and out of registration with the open end of said case or carton when said end portions are slid in opposite directions, a hinge connecting said rst named portion and said intermediate portion, hinges connecting said first named portion and said intermediate portion with said end portions respectively, and a strip extending around said case or carton and engaging and holding said end portions against said outer side walls.

9. A closure for a case or carton that has outer side walls forming an enclosure open at one end comprising a unitary section of material having a portion thereof extending across the open end of said case or carton and across the ends of said outer side walls and having its opposite end portions extending downwardly along the outer surfaces of two of said outer side walls of said case or carton, a device extending around said outer side walls of said case or carton and engaging and holding said end portions of said section against the outer surfaces of said side walls, and means for providing an opening through said section to the open end of said case or carton.
