The blank may be also creased for folding along the lines 22 in order that it may be folded to a reduced size and may be placed within the container which is to be covered.

After the blank is formed, as shown in Figure 1, the ends may be folded inwardly upon the cover along the line 22, which may be so positioned that after such folding the blank will be sufficiently reduced in size to fit within the container with which it is to be used as a cover. The folded cover may be placed on top of the article to be shipped and displayed in the container and a suitable top may be applied to the container to protect the article during shipping and storage.

When it is desired to display the articles the container is opened and the folded cover is removed and is unfolded to the position shown in Figure l. The end flaps I2 and I2a are then folded downwardly along the lines It and Ifia and the side flaps I3 and I3a are folded downwardly along the lines II and lid, the projections I5 being folded inwardly along the extensions of lines ID and Illa. and inserted and hooked within the slots l4 and I411, as illustrated in Figure 4. The cover may then be slipped over the edges of the container 23 and the cuts along the line l6 may be made continuous by breaking away the retaining sections I8. The contents of the box may be observed through the transparent material covering the opening I9 and when it is desired to obtain access to the material in the container, the handle I! may be lifted to fold the lid back along the line II.

The cover may be used, for example, as a cover for metal boxes or containers such as are used in the shipment of dried or fresh fruits, crackers, macaroni, cookies and other articles which it is desired to ship and display in bulk. The creases In, Illa, II and Ila, may be positioned, according to the size and shape of the container to be covered, so that the flaps I2, I21, I3 and I3a will fit snugly around the outside of the container 23, as illustrated in Figure 4. Of course, if the container is curved or irregularly shaped, the shape of the blank and the lid and the positions of the creases may be varied to accommodate such shapes. The opening in the lid may be omitted or one or more openings of any desired shape may be used. The line I6 may, of course, be given any suitable shape and the lid may be folded along some other line than the line II. If preferred, two openings may be provided and one single fold between the in place of the folds 22. Instead of using an integral blank 8 folding as described the cover may be hinged by suitable metal, cloth, etc. hinges along the line of fold.

It is apparent that many modifications of the invention described may be made and it is not intended to restrict it to the particular arrangements shown or described. The terms used in describing the invention have been used in their descriptive sense and not as terms of limitation and it is intended that all equivalents thereof be covered by the appended claims. In using the term cardboard in the claims it is intended to also cover other material which may be folded in the manner herein described.

What I claim is:

1. A cover for a container which is longer in one direction than the other and having edge portions extending downwardly and adapted to fit outside of the sides of the container, said cover and edges being hinged at an angle to the longer dimension of the cover so that the cover may be folded sufiiciently small to fit, when flattened into a plane substantially parallel to the bottom of the container, completely within said container in its normal shape for use.

2. A cover as defined in claim 1 with a hinged lid adapted to give access to the contents of the container, the said hinge at an angle to said longer dimension extending through said lid.

3. A cover as defined in claim 1 which has a cut out portion covered with transparent material and in which the hinge is positioned at the side of said transparent material.

4. A cover as defined in claim 1 with a hinged lid adapted to give access to the contents of said containensaid hinged lid having a cut out portion covered with transparent material and said hinge at an angle to the longer dimension of the cover passing through the lid at the side of said transparent material.

5. A cover as defined in claim 1 having a discontinuous cut extending around a portion of it to provide a hinged lid in said cover and in which openings may be used the said hinge at an angle to the longer dimension of the cover passes through said lid between the uncut portions of said discontinuous cut.

A blank for a cover for a container comprising a body portion longer in one direction than in the other, and edge portions hinged to said body portion and adapted to be folded to surround the container, said edge portions having interlocking means to retain them in the folded position, and said body portion and edge portions being hinged parallel to the short side to permit folding of the blank to a size sufiiciently small to fit completely within the container in its normal shape for use, when the blank is flattened and positioned substantially parallel to the bottom of the container, said body portion being cut to provide a hinged lid in said cover and the hinges of said body portion extending through said lid.

The combination with a container having a bottom, side walls and a cover, of a supplemental cover which is longer in one direction than the other and provided with edge portions adapted to extend downwardly to fit outside of the sides of the container, said supplemental cover and edges being hinged at an angle to the longer dimension of the cover so that the cover may be folded sufficiently small to fit, when flattened into a plane substantially parallel to the bottom of the container, completely within said container in its normal shape for use.

8. A cover as defined in claim 1 provided with a cut out portion covered with transparent material and having hinges extending across said cover on opposite sides of the said transparent material.

9. A cover as defined in claim 1 having a discontinuous cut extending around'a portion of it to provide a hinged lid in said cover, said lid being provided with a cut out portion covered with a transparent material and said cover having hinges extending across said lid on opposite sides of said transparent material and having uncut portions of said discontinuous out positioned on opposite sides of said hinges.
