CONTAINER 'Filed Dec. 5, 1933 INVENT OR BWZQM/ Maw-w Patented June 4, 1935 PATENT OFFICE CONTAINER Adrian 0. Daller, Dennis Port, Mass., assignor to Daller Carton 00., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corn tation of New York Application December 5, 1933, Serial No. 700,954
7 Claims.
This invention relates to a container and more specifically to a dispensing container.
In general, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character described, 5 which will efliciently accomplish the purpose for which it is intended, which is simple and economical of construction, which can be expeditiously and conveniently manipulated, and which can be readily manufactured and assembled.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sealed container which may be broken open so as to disclose a tucking flap, which may be used thereafter to close the container.
Another object is to provide a sealed container which may be broken open so as to disclose a dispensing aperture in one corner of the device.
Other objects of the invention Will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device, embodying one form of the invention, and showing the cover closed and before the seal has been broken;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. l, with the cover unsealed and open;'
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank adapted to be formed into the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modification of the device shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank adapted to be formed into the device shown in Fig. 4.
In the drawing, I denotes a blank having various sections or walls II, I2, I3, I4, I and I6, which may be called front, end, back, end, bottom, and top or cover sections, respectively. In the carton the two sections I4 may overlie each other and the two sections I5 may also. Certain parts are supplied with folding tabs II. An extension from the cover I6 may lie beneath the front section to be used as a tucking flap I8 after the carton has been once opened. At least a portion of the front wall is thus composed of a plurality of layers.
An extension I9 from the front section may overlie, .and be intersecured to, as by an adhesive, the entire top section or a portion thereof as shown. A score line 20 may set off a part 2| of the front section which overlies the extension I8 so as to c'omprise with it a plurality of layers. The score line may extend toward the corners to form lips therein.
When it is desired to open the container, the score line is severed and the portions I8 and 2| raised with the top layers I6 and I9. They may be hingedly raised along a line coinciding with the back edge of the extension I9 which may be the top edge of the back wall I3, or, as shown in Fig. 2, along a line intermediate the front and back walls. As the top is raised, any adhesive, or other means of intersecuring the top section I6 to the folding tabs I'I, gives way.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the cover I6 has an extension I8 which underlies but a part of the top of the front section, which part may be an upper corner of the front sec- 20 tion. A score line 20 in the front section sets off a portion 2| thereof overlying the extension I8. An extension I9 from the front section overlies at least a part of the top section. A score line 22 sets off a part 23 of the extension I9, the part 23 overlying that part 24 of the cover I6 to which the extension I8 is attached or with which it is associated. The score line 22 may be a continuation of the score line 20. The portions 23 and 24 may be intersecured as by an adhesive. Portion 24 may be set off from the cover section I6 by a score or weakened line 25.
The carton when tightly sealed, may be opened as described in connection with Fig. 1.
The areas 23 and 24 need not be at a corner in which case there will be a pair of score lines 22 and a pair of score lines 25. If the area 23 is slightly larger than the area 24, the score line 25 may be a slit as there can be no danger of the contents of the device leaking out.
There may be ears integral with the cover I6 as shown and described in the copending application of Charles J. Grace, Serial No. 587,664.
If desired, means may be provided to give an opening or aperture under the top plurality'of layers which will combine with the opening left by the removal of the removable front portion so as to give a directed flow to material being dispensed through the combined openings. The flap I'I, shown in Fig. 4, for example, may be cut pointedly toward the corner of the device, which latter then may function as a spout. Or, the flap may extend relatively far beneath the cover and have an opening permanently or removably positioned therein.
It is understood that the invention described and claimed herein is not to be limited by the particular terminology employed or by the relative dimensions of the portions shown in the drawing. For example, those parts referred to as covers may be sides, ends, or bottoms, and the box or carton may be taller than it is broad.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and difierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
