Abstract

1,079,781. Containers. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 9, 1963], No. 41152/64. Heading A4G. [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A box comprises an outer wall made from a rigid board and a flexible liner disposed inside and secured to the board to form a pouch. In one form, a box 20, Fig. 1, comprises outer board side walls 23, 24 to which a flexible liner 30 is secured to make two pouches 31, top flaps 28, 29 being folded over and secured in a closed position. The board 21 consists of cardboard &c. laminated by adhesive to an inner aluminium &c. metal foil, in turn preferably covered by a layer of heat sealing adhesive such as polyethylene. The liner 30 consists of paper laminated by polyethylene adhesive to an aluminium &c. foil, in turn preferably covered with another layer of polyethylene adhesive. Alternatively, the board may be polycoated board or plain board and the liner may be polycoated paper or plain paper. The contents of the box may be removed by separating the two flaps 28, 29, and then opening one or both of the pouches 31. The outer surface of the box may be provided with a decorative layer of metal foil &c. The box is fabricated by first scoring the board 21, which may be supplied in flat or rolled form, with parallel fold lines (34-37) Fig. 3 (not shown) corresponding to the edges. The flexible liner 30, which is wider than the board 21, is then folded into pleats (42). The foil sides of the board 21 and liner 30 are placed together and sealed by heat treatment along their top and bottom edges. The transverse middle portion 22 of the liner 30 is heat sealed to the board, which is next folded to the shape of the box, with the two pouches 31 open. When the two pouches 31 have been filled they are closed by heat sealing their ends to the top 28, 29, which are folded over and secured by adhesive or the like. As a modification, the pleats in the liner 30 may be partially or completely omitted.
