1459840 Packaging in sacks G A SERLACHIUS OY 1 May 1974 [7 May 1973] 19094/74 Heading B8C A machine for filling and closing sacks D comprises a hollow sack shaping and holding mandrel E on which sacks are fed to a filling position, a filling apparatus (A) Fig. 9 (not shown) which stacks and pushes goods into a sack at the filling position and pushes the filled sack off the mandrel, and a sack closing apparatus (C) Fig. 9 (not shown) which is aligned with the filling apparatus (A) and which folds and welds together apical regions of triangular flaps (K) Fig. 5 (not shown) formed on opposite sides of the bag mouth to provide a handle. The machine includes two or more shaping and holding mandrels which are mounted on an oscillatable or intermittently rotatable plate (4) Fig. 12 (not shown) and are expansible. The closing apparatus, Fig. 16, comprises sack mouth spreading fingers 19 which engage in the sack mouth and are moved apart along orbital paths, defined by guides 23, 24, 25, by a piston and cylinder assembly 26, 27 and a spring 30. Transverse welding jaws (H) Fig. 4 (not shown) weld adjacent central portions of the spread sack mouth before the fingers 19 are withdrawn. The triangular flaps (K) which are formed as a consequence of the bag mouth spreading, are then folded on to a plate J by hinged swing flaps L and (M) Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). The plate J and the swing flap L which have welding surfaces 36 and 40 respectively, co-operate to weld together triangular flaps (K).
