1,104,895. Packaging-machines. AUGUST WICKERSHEIM K.G. 13 Dec., 1965, No. 52800/65. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B5] A method of producing and closing packages comprises the steps of advancing a length of longitudinally folded material S over a vertical guide 50, heat-sealing the material along a transverse and longitudinal seam, opening the top of the package by expanding fingers 60, 61 to assist filling of the package, further advancing the package and heat-sealing its upper transverse seam whilst simultaneously parting the package from the web of material. The web S of preferably plastics material is fed between rolls 10-14 and sealing jaws 20, 21 and 30, 31. Jaw 21 is spring-loaded and when the transverse and longitudinal seals have been formed; the expanding fingers 60, 61 open the top of the package to allow it to be filled. The operation of the jaws and fingers is controlled by devices 23, 25 connected via linkages 81-84 to a common drive 80. After advancing the filled package, its top is sealed, this seal also forming the bottom seal of a second package. Plates 96, 98 support the package during this operation. Air jets cool the transverse weld, whilst water circulating in the hollow vertical jaws 20, 21 cools the longitudinal weld. A resistance wire 35 mounted in the jaw 31 parts one package from the next along the middle of the transverse seal.
