Abstract

835,306. Packaging machines. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. May 13, 1958 [May 22, 1957], No. 16248/57. Class 94(1). A packaging machine has jaws 16, 17, Fig. 2(a), that close on a thermoplastic tube 14 to flatten it over an area 22, and a hot knife 20 within the jaws for severing the flattened portion 22, the resulting molten beads 23 on the severed ends being consolidated by a plunger 26, Fig. 2(c), that advances a pair of blades 24 to compress the molten beads 23 against the jaw 16. The plunger 26 then retracts and jaws 16, 17 open and move upwardly, Fig. 1, before closing on the next sealing location. Whilst closed they move downwardly to draw the tube 14 through the machine. The jaws 16, 17 follow the path 1, 2, 3, 4, and a stationary cam 31 actuates the plunger 26. During each downward movement, material is fed into the tube 14 by a funnel 19 which, in conjunction with a surrounding former 13, forms a web 10 into the tube 14. An intermittently operated die 15 heat seals a side seam along the tube. According to the Provisional Specification the tube 14 may be formed from two strips sealed together along their edges.
