Abstract

1,245,154. Packaging machines; affixing sealing strips. AVERY PRODUCTS CORP. 27 Nov., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 56331/68. Headings B8C and B8F. A method of opening, filling and closing bags 8 comprises the steps of applying at least one adhesive strip 47 to opposite sides of a bag near the opening thereof so that opposed portions 48 of the strips project above the opening without being pressed against each other, pulling at least one projecting portion to pull apart opposed sides of the bag, filling the bag after it is opened, and closing the bag by pressing the projecting strip portions against each other. As shown, tubing of transparent synthetic resin or other material is fed through a heating element 4, for applying a transverse seal 5, and past a blade 7 which cuts the tubing to form separate bags 8 which fall into a support 14. Label-feeding devices 9, 10 co-operate to feed the labels to the location where the bags are filled through an opening 12, the labels being carried on bands 20 and the device 9 including a carriage 18 slidable back and forth in a horizontal direction. The bands 20 move over dispensing edges 24 which strip the labels from the bands, the labels being then pressed by rollers 31 on to the opposite sides of the bag 8 and the latter being then lowered by the support 14 when the bag is filled; the carriage 18 being moved to the left as seen in Fig. 2 causes the rollers 31 to press the projecting portions of the labels together to seal the bag. The support 14 being again lowered allows a pin 38 to pierce a hole 46 through the bag and labels and an arm 36, upon striking a stop 37, causes the flap 35 of the support 14 to swing to allow the filled bag to fall into a container. Instead of forming bags from a tube, bags fed from a pile to the support 14 may be used.
