1365802 Compression-packaging of compressible material CERTAIN-TEED SAINT GOBAIN INSULATION CORP 5 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971 7 April 1971] 459/72 Heading B8C A package of insulation material, Fig. 5, comprises a roll of fibrous insulation material 11 the roll being compressed and flattened radially and having a tabular wrapper surrounding flattened sides and the ends of the roll, the tubular wrapper having a substantially rectangular cross-section, so that the roll and wrapper provide a package of substantially rectangular overall shape. In a method of packaging compressible material such as rolls or boards of fibrous material, e.g. glass fibre, in sleeves, bags, or cartons, the overall shape of which is rectangular, rolls P of compressible material in a trough 12 are released, one at a time, by a revolving gate 13 to enter, at A, between lower and upper conveyers 14, 17 which flatten them before passing them into a loading section C. Here a collapsible tubular wrapper 6 is held open by a pair of guides 7, 7, which are mounted, one above the other, and which accommodate loading conveyers 31, 32 nested within their side flanges 7b and are driven at the same speed as the compressing conveyers 14, 17. The upper compressing conveyer 17 has an inclined entrance portion and is mounted on a vertically adjustable frame 21 to accommodate packages of different sizes, the upper shoe 7 being correspondingly vertically adjustably mounted on a pair of posts 8. Rolls 44, 45, mounted on frames 46, 47 pivoted at 48, 49 respectively to the posts 8, are made of material such as soft rubber and are driven, by chain and sprocket connections, at the same surface speed as the loading conveyers 31, 32 so that, when the rolls 44, 45 are raised and lowered respectively, by fluid pressure motors 50, 51 on to a wrapper 6 previously located on the shoes 7, 7, they eject the wrapper at the same speed as the roll is delivered from the loading conveyers 31, 32. In this manner the roll is delivered accommodated within the wrapper 6. A photo-electric control device may be provided at 54 to regulate the motors 50, 51 as the result of the influence of an advancing roll P, the control system preferably including a time delay. As shown the wrapper 6 is a strip of folded paper sheet with its brought together edges fastened by a stitched strip 6a which can be employed as a pull strip to open the package. When the rolls 44, 45 are raised a wrapper 6 can be inserted over the shoes 7 ready to receive the next compressed roll P, the right hand end ofthe shoes being tapered at 7a, Fig. 2.
