Abstract
855,472. Seaming; cutting webs. SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS Ltd. Oct. 30, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 34906/58. Classes 31 (1) and 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] A sealing and severing device in a packaging machine (see Group XVII) comprises a member 31 movable by a solenoid 33 which presses a thermoplastic web against a heated blade 36. The blade is shielded by bars 37 which are depressed by the member 31 to expose the blade. The member 31 may comprise a foamed silicon rubber pad, and the blade may have a covering of polytetrafluoroethylene to obviate adhesion between the knife and web. The knife and member 31 may be L-shaped to seal bags formed from the web along two sides simultaneously.
