Abstract

974,529. Wrapping-machines. SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS Ltd. Nov. 12, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962; March 15, 1963; Aug. 27, 1963], Nos. 43793/62, 10436/63 and 33950/63. Heading B8C. In a wrapping machine of the kind in which a longitudinally folded plastics web, the folds of which have been sealed together at the free end, is drawn forward, on article to be packaged placed between the folds and L-shaped<SP>-</SP> sealing means applied to seal and sever the web round the article and again seal the free web end, the sealing means is adjustable for various widths of article packaged. In one embodiment, the web passes over an opening guide 14 and a sealing pad 18 to rest on a slotted table 19, the latter being carried on pivoted arms 21, 27 so as to be adjustable heightwise for various article thicknesses. An upper sealing frame comprising bars 40, 42 and a resiliently mounted canvas &c. sheet 53 is pivoted on arms 36, 37 fixed to horizontally slideable rods 43, 50. Also mounted on the rods is a sealing bar 47. Transverse outward movement of the frame thus brings the bars 42, 47 nearer to a fixed wall 30, the bar 47 pressing an article placed within the folds against the wall when the frame is lowered. The bars 42, 47 and bar 40 and pad 18 then seal and sever the film about the article. The sheet 53 compresses the latter during sealing. In an alternative form, Fig. 3 (not shown), the web and roll move relative to a fixed longitudinal sealing bar to vary the package width.
