Apparatus for heat sealing and severing thermoplastic film includes a first member 1 having a heating element 5 mounted thereon and side plates 8, 8 which project a predetermined distance beyond the heating element, a strip of flexible heat-resistant material 7 draped between the side plates 8 and spaced from and covering the heating element 5, and a second member constituting a pressure pad 11 cooperating with the first member and on which the film 14 is placed, one of the members being movable with respect to the other whereby the element 5 indirectly contacts the film 14 to effect heat sealing and severing. As shown in Fig. 3, tubular film 14 is led from a supply reel 15 at one end of a table bed 10 with its open end facing pressure pad 11, an article 24 is placed in the open end of the tube and the leading edge of the tube is placed on pad 11. The movable heating bar 1 is moved downwardly on to the pad 11 to seal the two plies of film 14 together. The film and article are then moved to a position on table 10 so that the article 24 is beyond the sealing device and the sealing device is again operated. In a second embodiment two pressure pads at right-angles with corresponding heating bars are used to make transverse and longitudinal seams in a folded over sheet of material to totally enclose articles.
