Abstract

941,583. Packaging. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Aug. 30, 1961 [Aug. 31, 1960], No. 31264/61. Heading B8C. An article 20 is packaged in a sheet 11 having folded side edges forming flanges 15, 16, an upper sheet 12 being bonded to the flanges and end portions of the sheet 11 by an adhesive 23 coated on the undersurface of the sheet 12, the contacting surfaces of the folded side edges and areas at or near the ends of the sheet 11 having a further coating of adhesive 31 which closes up any air channels in the edges of the package. The adhesive 31 is thermoplastic, e.g. a plasticized polyvinyl acetate, activated under heat and pressure, or a non- thermoplastic adhesive may be used. The same adhesive may also be used on the sheet 12, the whole underside of which may be coated. The edge of the sheet 11 may be formed with a single fold, Fig. 13 (not shown), or with multiple folds, Fig. 14 (not shown). The package may be opened by peeling off the sheet 12, leaving the article 20, which may be kept sterile in the package. free from contamination by contact with the surrounding unsterile flanges. All the adhesive may be applied to the sheet 11, Figs. 15 and 16 (not shown). The sheets 11, 12 may be of dissimilar materials, e.g. the sheet 11 may be of paper and the sheet 12 of a transparent film. Apparatus.-As shown in Fig. 11, a strip of paper 32 impermeable to air-borne bacteria is drawn from a roll 33, coated with adhesive by a roller 34 on areas 35 and its side edges turned upwards at 36 and then outwards. Articles 40, e.g. surgical sponges, are dropped on to the strip from a supply station (not shown) or by hand, between the areas 35. A second paper strip 42, coated at 44 with adhesive, is supplied from a roll 46 and the sheets are sealed under heat and pressure by bars 47. Spring-urged plates 60 force the strips together transversely between the articles 40, a seal being effected under heat and pressure across each end of the package. The articles may be moved intermittently so that the sealing bars 47 operate when they are stationary; or the sealing mechanism may be reciprocable.
