Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A bag of flexible heat-sealable sheet material has applied to its inner surface adjacent one end of the bag a stripe 21, Fig. 4, of heat-sealinhibiting material, and that end of the bag is then sealed by heat as, for instance, by the application of a folded tape which becomes sealed at 27 to the outer surfaces 25, 29. The bag may be formed from a web 1, Fig. 1, of polyethylene to one face of which stripes 19 of heatseal-inhibiting material, such as a polyamidebase ink, is applied. One longitudinal edge of the web is also treated with a stripe 125, Fig. 16, of similar material but in this case the stripe is patterned so that, under heat, the edges of the tube are sealed at 129 and 131a. Other patterns are described and illustrated. The bags 43, Fig. 6, are fed from right to left on a belt 41 with their upper ends 61 protruding above the reaches of two belts 55. The ends 61 are flattened by a pin 57, a roller 59 applies the heat-inhibiting material, the ends spring back to the vertical position and the tape is applied thereto from a roll 67 to be heat-sealed by hot air.fed through ducts 75. In a modification, Figs. 9-12 (not shown), the stripes are located a small distance from the end of the bag and the end of the bag is then folded over on itself and heat applied. In the case of a valve bag, Figs. 22 and 23 (not shown), the valve sleeve is formed with the stripe and is so inserted in the bag that the stripe registers with the line at which heat sealing is effected on that edge of the bag through which it is inserted.
