Abstract

837,421. Making bags. ARMELIN, E. R., and PLASKETT, A. F. G. Nov. 6, 1957 [Aug. 6, 1956], No. 3692/56. Class 94(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXVIII] A process for the manufacture of a bag from a blank of flexible, heatsealing material, e.g. polyethylene or regenerated cellulose coated on both surfaces with nitrocellulose, comprises applying a transverse strip of anti-adhesive material to the blank, then forming the blank into a flat tube, folding back one end portion of the tube on to the body portion of the tube and adhesively uniting, by the application of heat and pressure, the folded end portion to the opposed outer surface of the body portion to form a transverse seam which closes the end of the tube, the anti-adhesive material being applied to the blank in such a manner that it is subsequently located between the opposed inner surfaced of the body portion of the tube in the region at which heat and pressure are applied, so that the said inner surfaces are not stuck together. A web 3 of heat sealing material is printed on its upper side (as shown) with transverse strips of printers' ink each of which extends from one side of the web to a line close to and parallel to the other side. The web is then fed under forming rollers 16 carried on a spindle 17 journalled in a bracket 18, and a forming plate 19 also mounted on the bracket 18, the combined length of the rollers 16 and the width of the plate 19 each being less than half the width of the web. The side portions of the web are folded over the plate 19 by forming fingers 20, 21 so that the edges overlap, the edge which is free of printers' ink being uppermost. The web is then fed under a roller 22 heated by a heater 24 and the overlapping edges of the web are pressed together between the roller and the plate 19 so that they stick together and the web is formed into a flat tube. The tube is cut into lengths by a knife carried by a roller 30, the cuts being made at a distance behind the leading edges of the inked strips which is equal to twice the width of the portion of the tubular blanks which is subsequently to be folded back. The blanks are then fed to a machine, which may be of the type described in Specification 837,420 where their rear ends are folded over and heat and pressure are applied to the portion so folded over the area of the inked strip only. The web 3 may be printed in such a way that the inner surface of the tubular blank is inked on one side of the tube only.
