Abstract

901,758. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO. Oct. 20, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1960], No. 35946/60. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] A web W of wrapper material is folded on a tubular former 12, so that its longitudinal edges overlap, and is sealed by a heated member 24 through an apron 40 and a slotted metal plate 42, the members 24, 40 and 42 being movable towards and away from the former 12 to effect the seal and to allow the sealed web to be drawn down before a further seal is effected. The member 24 is held in a block 26 fastened to a plate 32 and containing a heating element 36 and thermostat 38. The unit of which the member 24 forms a part is mounted on a swing- ing frame 60, Fig. 5, hinged to the machine frame at one end 72 and having a pin 76 at the other end engaging a hooked link 74 connected to a bell-crank 82 and cam mechanism whereby the unit is swung to and from the former 12. Springs 56 momentarily maintain the apron 40 in contact with the sealed web edges after the sealing is effected ; thereafter the frame 60 is swung further from the former 12 while draw bars 18 are swung inwards to grip and draw the tube downwards. As they move down, the draw-bars 18 also seal the tube transversely and sever it. The apron 40 may be of fibreglass cloth impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene. Cooling air is directed through ports 90.
