Abstract

913,114. Making tubes. LEASURE, W. C. July 27, 1959, No. 25684/59. Class 99(2). [Also in Group XVII]. In a machine of the type in which a tube is formed from a web and articles or increments of material are introduced into the tube which is then sealed transversely between them, the tube former operates on the outer surface only of the web the usual inner filling tube being omitted. Filling may take place in inclined or horizontal positions as well as in that shown, the web then carrying the material &c. along with it. The former 8 consists of tubular and wing portions and the tube may be extended and apertured as at 51 so that suction may be applied by a shoe 50 to draw the web against the former and keep the tube open. In one embodiment a vertical plate 16 may assist in directing quantitites of material from a scale pan into the tube. Seaming of the longitudinal overlap may be performed by opposed heated rollers, spring loaded bars, or by inner and outer bars 29<SP>1</SP>, 32<SP>1</SP> moved into web engaging position by a hydraulic motor 38. A method of designing the former is described, Fig. 7 (not shown). Specification 440,328 is referred to.
