A machine for wrapping up articles and seaming the edges of the wrapper together, comprises two mandrels 11 of a cross sectional shape corresponding to that of the article to be wrapped, the article being held between the mandrels during a part of the wrapping operation so that the wrapper is folded not only around the article but also around the mandrels to ensure a parallel alignment of the opposed longitudinal edges of the wrapper. The mandrels are withdrawn before the ends of the package are closed and sealed. An endless conveyer 1 moves the articles G into the machine against a stop. A reciprocating carriage 4 carries a pivoted slide 3 that pushes the articles G, two at a time, into a trunking 27 to a position in front of a wrapping sheet E. A pair of mandrels 11 are coupled by pivoted arms 10 to the carriage 4 such that at the end of each return stroke of the carriage 4 the mandrels 11 will be aligned with the articles G in front of the wrapping sheet E. As the carriage 4 performs its next forward stroke the mandrels 11 close on the articles G, and pivoted elements 28, also on the arms 10, move into engagement with the rear faces of the articles to push them against the wrapping sheet E and through a folding enclosure 34 to fold the sheet E into U-shape about the articles G and the mandrels 11. The partially wrapped articles are received by gripping jaws 35 of an intermittentlyrotatable conveyer 36 and, in this position, electrically heated jaws 37, 38 act to unite the transversely extending edges of the sheet together. The mandrels 11 then move out of the wrapper and the conveyor 36 moves the partially wrapped packages past fixed arcuate folding plate 45 to fold down the seam formed by the jaws 37, 38. The package is then brought to a further station (not shown) which, in known fashion, first spreads the two ends of the wrapper and then heat seals them at their inner marginal zones. Adjustments. To enable the spacing between the mandrels 11 to be adjusted the pivot of the arm 10 on the carriage 4 may be displaceable. Instead of two articles G, a single article may be wrapped.
