A machine for packaging cigarettes comprises a wheel 1, carrying a series of pairs of tubular formers 3, which is rotated intermittently to position each pair of formers in succession at station I to XII, and an intermittently-rotating feed wheel 2 carrying a similarlyarranged series of pairs of cells 7 which receive batches of cigarettes and from which the batches are pushed into the formers. Sheets of wrapping material are fed into association with each pair of formers at station I ; at station II mechanism 4 associated with each pair of formers folds the sheets into tubular form ; at station III one end of each tube is closed by folding and tucking and at stations IV and V the bottoms of the containers thus formed are pressed and sealed. At station VII the formers carrying the containers are aligned with a pair of filled cells 7 and the two batches of cigarettes are fed simultaneously into the formers by a pair of reciprocating pushers. Finally, at station X the batches are ejected from the process by a similar pair of pushers, thus stripping the containers from the formers and filling them with cigarettes. Each pair of cells is defined by an F-shaped member 8, 108 fixed to the wheel 2 and an inverted F-shaped member 9, 109 radially slidable thereon, the latter carrying a roller 13 engaging a fixed cam groove 12 whereby it is moved inwardly to expand the cells for the reception of the cigarettes and then outwardly to contract the cells, thus compressing the batches prior to their introduction into the formers.
