Abstract

1364822 Packaging machines; wrapping MACEWANS MACHINERY Ltd 6 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 10882/73 Heading B8C In pneumatically operated apparatus for wrapping articles such as cheese blocks, a laminated wrapping web 9 is drawn laterally over a pallet 7 on intermittent chain conveyer 5 by gripper means 13 of reciprocable carriage 12 and is severed by knife 17, an article 58 is placed on the web by lifting means 50 on carriage 53 and is moved on the conveyer to a first folding station 64 where the sheet is folded longitudinally around article 58 and heat-sealed to form a tube, a subsequent folding station 80 operating to fold, overlap, and seal the ends of the tube. An article 58 is only placed on web 9 if a lever 38 senses the presence of the web on pallet 7. The folding means at station 64 comprises pivoting plates 66, 67 on each side of conveyer 5, with a reciprocable heated sealing member 74. At station 80, pivoting heated plates engage all four sides of the package to compress and seal the folds. The wrapper is pierced by a spike on one of these plates to allow expulsion of trapped air.
