Abstract
950,060. Fluid-pressure apparatus. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. June 10, 1960 [June 24, 1959], No. 21634/59. Heading F1P. A fluid-operated actuator comprises a piston 1 which at the end of a relatively-long stroke is automatically reciprocated over a relativelyshort part of its total available stroke. The piston is, on one side, connected to an exhaust port 8, and, on the other side, connected by an inlet port 5 to a source of fluid pressure. The fluid pressure moves the piston 1 to the left and also acts on the end of a valve 10 which may be carried by the piston or the cylinder and is urged to a position opening a port 12 so that the fluid pressure aids a spring 19 to retain a valve 15 in a position closing a passage 16, 17, 18 leading from one side of the piston to the other. Towards the end of the stroke of the piston to the left, the piston may abut a buffer spring 9 and a rod 20 on the valve 10 engages the end cover 7 of the actuator to move the valve past the port 12 until the latter is open to the left-hand side of the piston. The pressure acting on the left-hand end of the valve 15 drops and the pressure from the source moves the valve 15 to open the passage 16, 17, 18. The resulting drop in pressure on the right-hand side of the piston permits the spring 9 or the load moved by the actuator, which may be the hopper of a cement mixer, to move the piston to the right until the fluid pressure from the source acts to move the valve 10 to its original position thus again reversing the direction of movement of the piston. The speed of the piston is controlled by the pressure of the fluid source or a metering device in the port 5 and the length of the to- and-fro movement at the end of the stroke of the piston determined by the length of the valve 10.
