Abstract

591,520. Engine valve-gear. OSBORNE, T. N. May 11, 1945, No. 11809. [Class 122 (ii)] In a compressed air engine having valve gear operated by the piston towards the ends of its stroke, the gear comprises two mushroom valves 9, 19 held against the valve facing 12 by spring or other devices 15 and having stems engaging grooves or recesses in rams 7, 22 respectively, whereby they are reciprocated. Ram 7 is tappet operated by the piston at the ends of its stroke by a rod 5 and moves valve 9 to supply compressed air from chest 17 to one end or the other of ram 22, which moves and thereby reciprocates valve 19 controlling supply and exhaust of air to and from the opposite ends of the engine cylinder. Exhaust air from the cylinders of the engine and of ram 22 passes respectively through the hollow heads of valves 19, 9 and communicating recesses 13 guiding the valve stems, to a port 7b in piston 7 leading to the atmosphere.
