Abstract

198,219. Whitted, J. B. June 8, 1922. Beat or lift valves ; spring gears operated in both directions - Comprises special arrangements of valves and valve-operating means in a multi-stage, air pump of the type having a piston in a power cylinder operated by a vacuum engine, and transmitting the movement to high and lowpressure cylinders for compressing the air, the piston operating the valves upon completion of its stroke in either directions. In the illustrated form, during the stroke of the hollow piston-rod 44 towards the right, air is drawn into the low pressure cylinder 6. On the return stroke, the air passes into the high-pressure cylinder 16. On the third stroke it is expelled. The vacuum engine for reciprocating the piston-rod comprises a cylinder 4 in which works a piston 54 secured to the rod. Ports 23, 25 in the cylinder heads communicate with a common conduit outside the cylinder which leads to a source of suction such as the intake of an internal-combustion engine. When the piston 54 reaches the left hand end of its stroke it compresses a spring 55 and moves a stirrup-shaped, pivoted, valve-carrying rod 31 to close the port 23 and open a port 32 to the atmosphere. This movement is communicated by a rod 40, arranged in a hood outside the cylinder and controlled by a spring 42, to a similar valve-carrying rod at the opposite end of the cylinder, whereby the atmospheric port 30 is closed and the suction port 25 opened. The suction then draws the piston to the right-hand end of the cylinder, the space on the left-hand side of the piston being filled with air admitted through the port 32. At the end of this stroke the valve mechanism is again reversed. The combined action of the springs 55 and the spring 42 give a quick valve movement at the ends of the stroke.
