Abstract
199,057. Payne, F. J., Payne, P. C., and Jackson, F. W. Dec. 19, 1921. Multi-stage piston pumps; actuating by hand power.-Double-acting multi-stage air pumps in which the cylinders of each stage are coaxial and are fitted with pistons connected to a common piston rod, and the piston rods of the two stages are actuated by a single manually-operated lever, are built up in a casing split into two cylindrical halves furnished with a particular arrangement of passages for the air, and with means for connecting the operating means to the piston rods. The pump comprises two superposed cylinders 3. 4, the cylindrical halves of which each form an integer, the two integers being connected by bolts 25. Double-headed pistons are reciprocated in each cylinder by a rocking-lever 18 through trunnions 19, the pivot 21 of the lever being formed with a socket at the exterior of the casing, for the reception of a plain or telescopic hand lever, whereby the pivot is rocked. Air entering at the port 5 passes the piston 13 as the latter approaches this port, is expelled on the return stroke through the valve 7 and port 8 into the cylinder 4, and finally, on the outward stroke of the piston 14, is expelled through the ports 8, 10 and valve 11 to a common delivery nozzle 12 at the middle of the appliance. The valves and passages are duplicated at the other end of the apparatus.
