Abstract

Actuating pumps by footpower; compound piston pumps.-A compound tyre inflater comprises two concentric cylinders and one or more cylinders external to and parallel with them, adapted to compress the air in at least three stages simultaneously on the down stroke of the pistons. The Figure shows a three-stage pump in which the first and second stages are effected in concentric cylinders a, f. The outer cylinder a has air inlet perforations o in its upper end, and air is compressed in it by a flap valve j on the outside of the cylinder f, and passes by a flap valve h mounted within this cylinder to its interior, and past a third valve to the upper closed end of the cylinder. It then flows past a ball valve p into an axial pipe d and tubular connections to the upper end of a parallel cylinder r, the flap-valve piston of which is connected to the same bridge-piece, w as is the cap g of the cylinder f, the bridge-piece being operated by lever action, for example, as described in Specification 179,971. The return stroke is effected by a spring m.
