Abstract

Actuating pumps by fluid-pressure motors; compound piston pumps; heat of compression, absorbing; valves, arrangement of.-A multiplecylinder engine, such as an internalcombustion engine, is converted into a compressor for coal gas, air, &c., or a pump for liquids, by attaching a cylinder such as D of smaller diameter to the end of one of the ordinary cylinders E of the engine, and mounting a plunger such as A on the engine piston G to compress coal gas, say, in the cylinder D and deliver it past a non-return valve H into a reser voir. The engine piston and cylinder may be employed merely as a motion block and slide respectively, in which case the piston may be perforated to diminish air resistance. The cylinder has one or more holes in it, and gas is admitted to the additional cylinder through a side port uncovered by the plunger or a non-return valve. Alternatively, the engine cylinder may be employed to compress gas up to its limit of strength and then be cut out automatically. In the form shown, gas is admitted to the cylinder E past a valve, actuated from the piston G, and through a port J, is compressed in the cylinder E, passes through ports C into the hollow plunger A and past a non-return valve B into the cylinder D where it is further compressed, and finally is delivered past the valve H to the reservoir. The plunger has piston rings and behind these clearance is left for the passage of the gas to the ports C which may be fitted with valves. A cooling- water jacket L is secured by ties K around the cylinder D and communicates through passages P with a jacket M surrounding the cylinder E and provided with a filling-top N. Several compressors with plungers of different diameters may be employed to effect multi-stage compression, or they may deliver the gas at different pressures to separate containers. When liquids are to be pumped, the inlet valve is connected to a liquid supply and the valve H delivers to a storage tank.
