3117. Brotherhood, S., and Bryant, C. W. Feb. 7. Water and other liquid pressure engines.-In a two-stage compressor, which is particularly adapted for use on warships, a compressing-cylinder fitted with a differential piston is arranged between two hydraulic motor cylinders and is surrounded by a jacket space receiving the exhaust from the motors and forming the inter-cooler. Figs. 1 and 2 show such a compressor with compressing-cylinder a, differential piston e, jacket c, and motors b actuating cranks enclosed in a chamber provided in its base with an oil-bath for lubricating purposes. Water from the hydraulic main q is sprayed through the nozzle p into the air before compression, and the air passes through the coil j in the jacket c before second-stage compression in the annular chamber n. The motors are of ordinary type, the water from the main q being distributed by piston valves u on a rod v actuated from eccentrics on the driving-shaft. The water supply is cut in and out at the valve 4 in accordance with the air pressure in the reservoir; for this purpose the valve 4 is connected to a piston 5 which normally is in communication with the exhaust, by way of the pipe 11, so that the valve remains open; a predetermined reservoir pressure in the pipe 7, however, raises a piston in the cylinder 8, against the action of a spring 10, thereby operating a slide valve which admits water from the main to the pipe 11 and piston 5 and effects the closing of the valve.
