9 UNITED STATES;
PATENT Druten., l
GEoRGE EDWARD RELLIss AND ALFRED MoRooM, oF RRMINGHAM,
ENGLAND. l
PUMP FOR CoMPRl-:essilNe AIR R GASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,225, dated May 1, 1894. ApplieatlonledAugust l, 1893. Serial No. 482.112. (No model.) Patented in England February 16, 1885,.N0. 2,123, and
To @ZZ whom t may concern: e
Be it known that we, GEORGE EDWARD BEL- LIss and ALFRED MoRooM, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improve-4 ments in Pumps for Compressing Air or Gases; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which `it appertains to make and use the same.
\ A patent for this invention has been obtained in `Great Britain, No. 1,992, dated February 2, 1892, and features of this invention have been patented to us in Great Britain,` No. 2,123, dated February 16, 1885.
The object of our invention is to produceal convenient and effective two stage compressing pump capable of operating at high pressures and with considerable` frequency of reciprocation While simple in construction and readily accessible for examination and adjustment. v i
Our invention consists in the combination of low and high pressuresingle acting compressing cylinders arranged concentrically with tandem pistons compressing on opposing sides together with special water jacketing and cooling arrangements.
, Referring to the accompanying sheet of drawings-Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical sections, taken in planesat right angles to one another, of a two stage pump for com- 1 pressing air or gases, the parts of the said l water into the tank of the said compressing` pump being constructed, combined, and worked according to our invention; the said twostage compressing pump having combined with it a water pump for pumping cooling pump as hereinafter particularly explained. y The same letters of reference indicatelthe same parts in both figures.`
A is the larger pump cylinder or chamber open at top when atmospheric airis to `be compressed, but closed and` put into commu` nication with the store of or the source of gas to be compressed; B is the piston working in the said cylinder A and provided with the valve and passage at C. Surrounding the sides and bottom of the larger pumpcylinder isa tank D containing cooling water and also the coils of `pipesE and F, through which coils theeompressed air or gas is cooled as it passes through them.
G is the smaller pump cylinder arranged above and concentric with the larger pump cylinder A; H is the piston or plunger working in the said smaller cylinder G. The two pistons or plungers B and H are connected by the same reciprocating piston rod J worked in any convenient way.
The bottom of the small pump cylinder G is connected to the top of the larger cylinder A and with the coils in the tank D in the fol lowing manner; K is a pipe opening into the bottom of the cylinder A and provided with an ordinary non-return valve L. This pipe 1K rising upward, is connected with the coil E in the tank D andthe end of the coil is connected with the outside pipe M which` opens by the horizontal pipe N into the top ot' the small pump cylinder G which has a non-rel turn valve P anda valve Q opening into the vertical pipe R connected with the smaller coil F in the tank D. The outer end of the smaller coil F is connected with a vertical'delivery pipe by which the compressed and cooled air or gas is delivered from the pump.`
`The action of the pumpis as follows:-On the larger piston B making `its upstroke, air or gas from .the upper partof the cylinder A passes through the valve at C in the said piston to the space between the said piston and `bottom of the cylinder A, and on the piston B `making its downstroke, the air or gas is compressed and opening the non-return valve L passes by thepipe K to the lower coil E in the water tank D, for cooling the compressed l air or gas. The compressed air or gas after*` passes by the `circulating through the coil E pipes M and N to thetop `of `the smaller cylinder G, and enters the said smaller cylinder G on the downstroke of the piston H. Onthe smallerpiston or plunger I-I making its upstroke, the compressed air which has been delivered between it and the top of the said smaller cylinder is further compressed by, and pumped out of the said cylinder G, which doubly compressed air or gas openlng the nonroo` return valve Q passes by the pipe R to the coil F in the tank D, by which coil it is cooled and is delivered by the delivery pipe from the' pump. The course of the compressed air or gas through the pump and cooling appliances is indicated by the full lined arrows in the drawings.
For the purpose of pumping cooling water through the tank D, and for cooling sufficiently both low and -high pressure pistons, we adopt the following arrangement of parts: The bottom of the smaller cylinder G is used as awater pump and is in communication by means of the passage U with the chamber V of the water supply. Abovethe passage U is a second passage W with a Valve X opening up between them. This second passage W is connected by the annular passage Y, chamber Y2 and passage Y3 with the water tank D.
`As the plunger I-I of the'small cylinder rises in the said cylinder for effecting" the second compressing operation, water is drawn into the lower part of the said cylinder, which water on the return stroke of the plunger. is pumped through the passages described and represented, into the tank D. The course of the water from the supply chamber V into the lower part of the pump cylinder G and from thence to the water tank D is indicated by the dotted arrows in the drawings. The low pressure piston rod has a lantern brass a to allow the water of the water jacket to come into contact with the low pressure rod.
By our invention a compact and efiicient arrangement of a double stage air or gas compressing pump together with self contained appliances for effectually cooling the compressed air or gas is obtained.
The use of the lower part of the high pressure cylinder as a water pump has the great advantage of causing the high pressure piston and the interior of the high pressure cylinder to Work at all times with water contact and lubrication. The piston packing leather is thus kept in admirable condition because of the low temperature of the piston, notwithstanding the high temperature of the compressed or high pressure air or gas. The high pressure cylinder is by our arrangement brought in contact with water both on the internal and external surfaces.
The valve x20 shown in the left hand side of the large piston is a relief safety valv'e for the low pressure cylinder to allow the discharge of any excess pressure either due to water or to the blocking or stopping of the proper outlet valve. The Valve w30 in the left hand side of the upper cylinder head is for the same purpose as regards the high pressure cylinder, and the valve w40 at the right in the upper end of the water tank D, is also a .relief valve to prevent over pressure in the water jacket or casing.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is 1. In a gas or air compressor, the low and high pressure cylinders A G, the pistons B I-I therein, the air conduit leading directly from one end only of lthe low pressure cylinder to the high pressure cylinder whereby the air will be forced from the cylinder at one stroke, the cooling tank and passages and the inlet for the water connecting with one of the cylinders whereby the water will be forcedthrough the cooling passage and tank, substantially as described.
2. In a gas or air compressor, the low and -high pressure cylinders, A G, the piston B in the low pressure cylinder having a valve for the passage of air from one end of the cylinder to the other, the conduit leading from the discharge end of the low-pressure cylinder to the high pressure cylinder, the airconduit leading from the high pressure cylinder, the cooling tank and the Water passage leading thereto from one of the cylinders, substantially as described.
3. In combination in a gas or air compressor, the high and low pressure cylinders, the pistons therein, the air conduit from the 10W to the high pressure cylinder, the air conduit from the high pressure cylinder comprising the coil, the cooling tank inwhich said coil is located surrounding the low pressure cylinder and the water channel connected with the cooling tank and through which the water is forced by the operation of the compressor,
substantially as described.
et. In combination, the low and high pressure cylinders, the pistons therein, the air conduit from the low to the high pressure cylinders, the water chamber W around the high pressure cylinder, the inlet channel U for the water leading to the high pressure chamber, the valve X opening from the inlet conduit into the chamber W and the water chamber about the low pressure cylinder connected with the Water chamber W, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE EDWARD BELLISS. ALFRED MORCOM. In presence of- WILLIAM EVANS, ALBERT PARKER.
