COMBQUND HAND AIR-COMPBESSING PUMP.
Application ea February 19, ie2a. semi mi. 619,887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ,Tnnnrn C. VANDE- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Epping, in the countylof Williams and State or North Dakota, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Comporuid Hand Air-Compressing Pumps, otl
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawhis invention relates to compound hand lair compressingpumps and has for its primaryobject to provide an improved pump of this kind particularly adapted for usein connection with the inflation ,or vehicle tires.
The present adapted for use wherein a maximum of compression is required to be produced in a minimum of space, witha minimum weight and number of parts. 7
With theabove general objects in view, and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form com- ;bination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the. accompanying drawings andclaimed.
:In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts the present invention embodies a relatively large low compression cylinder 1 and a relatively small high compression cylinder 2. The cylinders 1 and 2 are] detachably mounted at their lower ends upon an elongated cast metal base?) whichhas upstanding circular flanges 3 into which the lower ends of the cylinders 1 and2 are detachably threaded, the opposite ends of the base plate 3 projecting a suitable distanceso that the operator may place his feet thereon for steadying the pump in the usual manner.
A piston rod 4 is provided for the high compression cylinder 2 while a similar pis ton rod 4* is providedto-r the low compression cylinder ,1, the rods 4 and r being I invention is adapted, however i't'or eneral use and 1s es small 7 7 v rigidly connected at their upper ends by a means of a crossbar 5 whose projecting ends are formed "to provide handles 5 to be gripped by the'operator for reciprocating the pistons Pana P of the low compression and high compression cylinders respectively. The piston rods i and 4 are of similar lengths so that the pistons P and P are s multaneously positioned in the same horizontal plane, the piston being pro- .vided w th adownwardly facing packing' 1 cup, wh le the piston P is provided with an upwardly facing packing cup."v This enables (TOITLPTQSSIOIIOLE airbelow the piston P and above the piston P".
The lower end of the low compression cylinderl is provided with an opening communicatingwith an opening through the flange 3 of said cylinder 1, and a suitable inlet check valve 13 connected with the opening of said flange 3* for permitting air to enter the cylinder 1 beneath the piston P wvhilepreventing the escape of such air through the valve 13 upon the downward compression strcke'ot the piston P. The
flange 3 of the cylinder lis provided with a port at its side nearthe cylinder 2 and its port communicates with the lower end of a pipe 11 which extends upwardly between the cylinders and has its upper end'in.,communication with the interior of the high compression cylinder 2 at the upper end of the latter. A check valve 12 is arranged in the pipe 'll so as to permit, tree passage of V the air from'the cylinder 1 to the cylinder 2,
in the usual manner, forconnection with the' va lveiof a pneumatic tire.
From the foregoing it will be readily een that the present pump is exceedingly simple in COBStILlClZlOD, requiring only two check valves and packing for only the piston of the highfcon'ipression cylinder.
1301171 On tlie' down stroke of the piston, V the air passes and is forced by piston P from the low compression cylinder 1 through pipe 11 past the-check valve 12 into the upper end Infoperat-ion,'on the upstroke of the pistons 'P andfPf air isfdrawninto the lower endsoff'bo'th cylinders through the check 1 valve l3 z'vnd the port or piston- 15,at the same time such air' as is within the high compression cylinder 2 being itorced out of the same through the hose while the loose f t of the piston rod 1 in the cap 8 will allow reliefof pressure from above thepisof the high compression cylinder 2. On the next upstroke of the pistons the previously compressedair which has been delivered from cylinder 1 to the cylinderQ is forced "out through the hose l0,through the tire,
both cylinders again drawing in air through the chec'k valve 10 and piston 15, as
.' above mentioned. This provides a: powerful and simplelpu'mp having only one connectin'g rod or piston rodthat requires packing,
therefore providing an easy working pump for obtaining high pressure tlllOllglllilitllUtll operation.
"It is believedtliat the construction and operation as well as the advantages of the present invent on will be readily understood and ap 'ireciated by those skilled ,in' the art.
Minor chai'iges may be made without departingfrom the spirit and scope of the in- VQlltlOIl as claimed. 7
