Description

ALBERT JOHNSON, OF
PATENT 'QFFICE.
LIME SPRINGS, IOWA.
DOUBLE-ACTING AIR' PUMP.
Application filed May 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ALBERT JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lime Springs, in the county of Howard and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Air Pumps, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to double acting air pumps, the main object of which is to provide in a simple and practical form an air pump in which the piston will draw air into and force air out of the pump cylinder at each stroke of the piston.
Another object is to provide a pump mechanism constructed in such a manner as to embody independent intake check valve cylinders which communicate with a double acting outlet check valve.
These and other objects will be apparent from the accompanying drawing and specitication.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the pump;
Figure 2 is a detail of an intake check valve.
In carrying out this invention I provide an upper intake check valve cylinder 1 and a lower intake check valve cylinder 2. The said lower intake check valve cylinder 2 has an external flange 3, an internal flange 4, and a threaded pipe nipple 5 formed therein. Hinge lugs 6 are provided in the lower intake check valve cylinder 2 immediately above an air intake aperture 7 A check valve cover 8 is hingedly secured to the hinge lugs 6 and is adapted to engage the intake aperture 7. The upper end of the lower intake check valve cylinder 2 is threaded as shown at 9 and is engaged by a pump cylinder 10. The upper intake check valve cylinder 1 is identical to the lower intake check valve cylinder 2 with the exception of the external flange 3, in lieu-of which an internal flange 11 is provided. The said upper intake check valve cylinder 1 is also threaded on both ends as shown at 12 and 13; the end 12 being adapted to engage the upper end of the pump cylinder 10. A piston rod 1% carrying a piston 15 is passed through the upper intake check valve cylinder 1 into the pump cylinder 10. A washer 16 which is mounted over the piston rod 14 bears against the internal flange 11, while a cap 17 which is provided with packing 18 is m nted over t pi on rod 14: and thread- 1925. Serial No. 29,965.
edly secured to the upper intake check valve cylinder 1 as shown at 13. The internal flanges ot' the upper and lower intake check valve cylinders 1 and 2 serve as stops for the piston 15. A base 19 is secure? to the external flange 3 and a handle 20 to the piston rod 1%. An elbow valve 21 having a hose nipple 22 incorporated therein is threaded ly secured to the pipe nipple 5 of the upper intake check valve cylinder 1 and to a pipe 23 which is in turn secured to an elbow 24- by means of a coupling 25. A coupling 26 is provided for securing the elbow 21 to the pipe nipple 5, of the lower intake check valve cylinder 2. A ball 27 is located in the elbow valve 21 and provides the operating means for the said valve. An air hose 28 engages the hose nipple 22.
In operation upon. the down stroke of the piston 15, the check valve 8 of the upper intake check valve cylinder 1 is opened, while the pipe nipple 5 is closed by the ball 27 thru suction created by the piston 15. Upon the said clown stroke the check valve 8 of the lower intake check valve cylinder 2 is closed thru the compression of the air, which escapes into the article to be inflated thru the pipe nipple 5, elbow 2 1, pipe 23, elbow valve 21, hose nipple 22 and hose 28. Upon the up-stroke of the piston 15 the check valve 8 of the lower intake check valve cylinder 2 is opened and the upper end of the pipe 28 closed by the ball 27 thru suction created by the said up stroke, while the check valve 8 of the upper intake check valve cylinder is closed thru the compressed air which escapes into the object to be inflated thru the pipe nipple 5, the elbow valve 21, hose nipple 22 and hose 28.
lVhi-le I have herein described a certain specific method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood same may be varied in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, embodying a pump cylinder; a piston mounted in said pump cylinder and a piston rod and handle secured to said piston; upper and lower intake check valve cylinders having air inlets provided therein, secured to said pump cylinder; check valvejcovers hingedly mounted over said air inlets; piston stops incorporated in said intake check valve cylinders; a cap mounted. over said piston rod threadedly secured to said upper intake check valve cylinder; pipe nipples incorporated in said intake check valve cylinders; an elbow and pipe secured to the said lower pipe nipple; a ball type elbow valve secured to the said upper pipe nipple. and to the said pipe; and a hose nipple incorporated in said elbow valve.
In an air pump of the kind described, a pump cylinder; upper and lower intake check valve cylinders for said punip cylinder; a base and a cap for said intake check valve cylinders: a piston in said pninp cylinder; air intake openings in said intake 15 check valve cylinders; hinged check valve covers over-each of said air intake openings disposed interiorly of said intake check valve cylinders; said intake check valve cylinders having piston stop flanges: pipe nipples communicating the interior of said intake check valve cylinders with the outside; a pipe and elbow for said lower pipe nipple: an elbow for said pipe and upper pipe nipple; a hose nipple for said elbow: and a ball valve in said elbow adapted to alternately move in the front of said pipe and said pipe nipple in response to the movement of the piston.
In testimony whereof I ai'iix in v signat are.
