The compression spring 19 surrounds the thimble 15, and the upper end of the spring abuts against the flange 17 of the thimble.
A tube 20 slides within the packing 16 of the gland, and the tube 20 also hasa tight sliding fit around the inner barrel 4. There are openings 21 in the tube 20. When the tube 20 is at the limit of its downward stroke, the openings 21 are closed by the inner barrel 4. Near to its upper end,-the tube 20 has other openings 22. A piston 23 is mounted on the lower end of the tube 20.
The piston 23 slides in contact with the inner surface of the outer barrel 1. The piston 23 may be denominated a first piston, and second piston, marked by the numeral 24, slides within the inner barrel 4. The second piston 24 is carried by a cage 25. Within the cage 25 operates a ball valve 26 cooperating with a seat 27 in the cage, the ball valve closing downwardly. The cage 25 is mounted on the lower end of an operating member 28, which may be a rod. The rod 28 is held by a securing element 29 in the hub 30 of a head 31. The head 31 is threaded into the upper end of the tube 20, and, thus, the pistons 23 and 24 are connected for simultaneous movement. There are openings 32 in the head 31.
On the up-stroke, the piston-24 sucks liquid into the inner barrel 4, the valve 10 opening, and the valve 26 closing. The piston 23 sucks liquid into the space between the outer barrel 1 and the inner barrel 4, the liquid entering either through the openings 6 in the partition 5, or through the apertures 7 in the inner barrel 4, or by way of both of these sources. WVhen the pistons 24 and 23 move downwardly, the valve 10 closes, and the valve 26 opens. the liquid which is between the outer barrel 1 and the inner barrel 4 through the apertures 7 and upwardly past thevalve 26, and when the pistons 24 and 23 move upwardly 24 boosts the column of water in the inner barrel 4, and the water pours out through the openings 21 in the tube 20, as those openings arrive upon the upper end of the thimble 15.
