To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST O. Monnvnnn, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to pumps, and more particularlyrelates to a novel valving sys tem for force pumps.
As a principal object, itis contemplated by this invention to provide a hollow cylin drical pump plunger in which shall operate a simple valve loosely positioned therein to be directly acted upon by the fluid pumped and to be checked at predetermined limits of movement in order to control the flow of the mentioned fluid. An object of equal importance foregoing is to construct a pumping device of the type described which shall be constructed with such regard to proportion, number and arrangement of parts as to be cheaply manufactured as well as durable and eflicient, in operation.
The above and additional objects which will become apparent as this explanatory description proceeds, are accomplished by such means as, are illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly brought out in the claims which are appended hereto and form plication.
l/Vith reference to the drawings, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiment 01 this invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which like characters of reference designate similar parts: Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a pump casing and showing the particular pump plunger comprehended by this invention at the beginning of its upstroke, Fig. 2 is a similar view but illustrating the plunger at the beginning of the down stroke, Fig. 3 is a plan of the plunger, Fig. i is an enlarged bottom plan of the plunger, and Fig. 5 is a section taken transversely of the plunger valve stem looking upward at the'head.
There is illustrated a pump casing 10 of the customary cylindrical form extending downwardly to the fluid source and provided at its upper end with an outlet spout 11 and fixed arm 12 to which is pivoted as Specification of Letters Patent.

The pump plunger comprises mainly the hollow cylinder 16 formed along its upper edge with the annular flange 17 to which there is secured by any usual fastening means 18 a spider 19 having a loose connection with the pump rod 15, it being understood of course that the plunger cylinder is of comparatively small diameter with relation to the pump casing in substantially the proportions illustrated. At the lower end of the plunger there is secured the annular metallic flange 2O maintained in fixed relation to the plunger and serving to secure the flexible packing ring 21 which is positioned thereagainst by the loose metallic washer 22 so as to be readily removable, the
last named washer being held in place by a cap 23 which is threadedly received over the lower open end of the piston cylinder and which is also formed with an internal annular flange 24 serving as a Stop to limit downward movement of the valve plunger as will be hereinafter more fully described. As a limit for the mentioned valve at its opposite point of movement there is removably positioned by the fastening means 25 upon the flange 17, a cross arch 26 as is clearly illustratedin Fig. 3.

In operation, the handle 14 is depended upon to actuate the pumping mechanism, movement ofthe handle resulting in reciprocation of the pump cylinder 16 within the casing 10. Upon the up strokes as illustrated in Fig. 1, the weight of the super-incumbent water will force the inner piston valve downwardly until its movement is limited by the stop 33 in contact with the flange 2st, at which point the packing rings will be below the apertures 32 and will effectually prevent dispersion of the upper body of water into that portion of the casing below the main pump packing 21. Upon the down stroke of the pump cylinder the lower body of fluid, to escape the otherwise resultant compression will rise through the cylinder and force the piston valve to its uppermost limit of movement in which it is halted by the cross arch 26 as illustrated more particularly in Fig. 2 until the aper- 5 that such minor changes in the matters of proportion and degree may be made in later adaptations of this device as shall not alter the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

2. The combination with a pump casing, of a cylinder, reciprocable therein, a flange formed'integrally with said cylinder at the upper end thereof, a second flangefiXed to said cylinder at'the lower end thereof, manually operable means to actuate said cylinder,
connections between said actuating means and the first-mentioned flange, a piston valve reciprocable within said cylinder, and means for causing movement of said valve contrary to the movementof said cylinder.
