' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HENRY FOSTER, OF ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA.
DOUBLE-ACTING SUBMERGED PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,117, dated March 17, 1885.
' Application filed August 29, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY Fos- TER, of Alameda, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Double-Acting Submerged Pumps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful double-acting submerged pump for deep wells, and more especially for Artesian or bored wells, in which the diametrical space is limited.
My invention consists in a novel hollow double-valved plunger and hollow piston as applied to a cylinder having valves at each end.
The object of my invention is to provide a double-acting pump having small area in cross-section, whereby it is adapted for Artesian and bored wells, or for any wells in which the space is limited, and by reason of its double action has an increased capacity in a given time.
Beferringto the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my pump. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bottom of the cylinder. Fig. 3 is a plan of the valve-ring B. Fig. 4 is a plan of the bottom of the hollow plunger. r
A is the cylinder which is to be submerged in the well. At its lower end it is provided with ports a, arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 2. At its upper end it has similar These ports are controlled by the shown in Fig. 3, of annular bands or rings of metal and leather packing riveted together, Fig. 1. These valves slide on spindles or bolts 1), and are actuated by means of springs c.
D is the hollow plunger fitted within the cylinder A. The bottom of the plunger is provided with ports d, as shown in Fig. 4, controlled by the annular band or valve E. The top of the plunger is provided with ports (1, controlled by valve E. These valves are guided by spindles or bolts F, around which are springs G, by which the valves are actuated. Screwed into the top of the hollow plunger is the hollow piston-rod H, the lower end of which communicates directly with the hollow plunger, and-its upper end is open and has secured to it the yoke I of the connecting-rod or pitman, by which the piston and plunger are operated.
J is a pipe screwed into the top of the cylinder. The hollow piston H is fitted snugly within the pipe J.
j are annular grooves forming water-packing. These are made between the hollow piston-rod H and the pipe J and between the plunger D and the cylinder A.
The operation of the device is as follows: Upon the downstroke of the plunger and pistonthe valve B at the bottom of the cylinder closes, while the valve B at its top opens. The valve E in the plunger opens and the valve E closes. This action forces the water in the cylinder below the plunger through the ports (2 into the hollow plunger and up through the hollow piston. Upon the upstroke the valve B at the top of the cylinder closes, while the valveB at its bottom opens. The valve E in the plunger opens, while its valve E closes.
upon both the down and the up stroke, while at the same time I am enabled to make the cylinder with a small diameter, as is required for fitting in the well, and still have the pump of a capacity much increased above a singleacting pump. v
I am aware of Patents No. 32,048, April 16, 1861, N 0. 211,168, January 7, 1879, and No. 139,650, June 10, 1873, and therefore lay no claim to the constructions therein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a submerged pump, the combination, with a cylinder having valve-ports and valverings B B, of the hollow plunger D, having oppositely-located ports (1 d in each end, the
the spindles or bolts F and the springs G,
lrings,.-springs'i"or actuating said rings, and I0 I apistourod, H, all constructed and arranged to operate as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. I
CHARLES HENRY FOSTER .Vitnesses: I
S. H. NOURsE, H. 0. LEE.
