PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,957, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed October 15, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS COURTNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Walthall, in the county of -Webster and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to pumps; and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter de scribed, and pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawing shows a central vertical section of my pump, the lower part being within a well. The detail View, to the right of the pump, represents two threaded ends of the rod and a section of the couplingnut.
The letter A is the handle, and B a bar, bolted to the top of pump.
is the fulcrum on bar B for the handle.
D is the pump-rod, having flat upper end, D. The inn er end of the pump-handle is provided with an opening, through which the flat end D of the rod D passes.
D are openings in the fiat portion of the rod, and D is a pivot for securing the inner end of the handle to the rod. 7 By this means the handle is adjustably secured to the rod.
E indicates nut-joints, by means of which the threaded ends of the rods D are secured.
G G are the sectional portions of the pump, united by lap-joints II, whereby one section fits within the other.
G is the continuous central opening in the P P- I represents the plunger-valve, having a central vertical opening.
I I is a cage on the top of plunger I; and Y K is a rubber ball within the cage, by means of which the opening I is opened and closed, which will be more fully hereinafter specified.
J J are nuts uniting the lower threaded end of the rod D to the plunger-cage.

L is a cage on the top of the valve to keep the rubber ball M within bounds.
N represents a series of openings in the sides of the pump under the fixed valve, and O is the spout.

. is made in lengths of three to ten feet, and is coupled at every joint in the pump. Theobject of having j oints so shortis for convenience in placing the same in well By bearing down on the handle the ball M is raised and water drawn into the pump through the opening L. Then by raising the handle the rod D descends, the ball M drops back into its seat, closing the flow into the pump. At the same time the plunger-valve I descends, and the ball K rises from its seat, permitting the water to rise above the plunger I. After a few strokes of the handle, the water is raised to the spout. When the water is once drawn into the pump above the plunger, it cannot get back.
This pump never freezes nor needs priming, as a great many others do, owing to the fact that all the working parts are in the water.
I attach importance to the fact that as the lap-jointed sections of the pump are fitted one on the other, the sections F of the rod D are also secured to each other at saidjoints of the sections G by means of nuts J J.
I am aware of the Patent No. 42,503, of April 26, 1864; and I do not claim such a construction of pump, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the pump-stock made of the lap-jointedsections, fitted one over the other, with the adjustable rod D, having the threaded sections F jointed at each lap-joint of the pump-stock sections, substantially as described.
