DOUBLE-ACTING SU BMERGED FORCE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,714, dated May 12, 1885.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, Morr B. BROOKS, a citizen oi the United States, residing at North Hammond, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Actin g Submerged Force-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference bein g had to the annexed drawings, makinga part of this specification, and. to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a sectional elevation of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the upper valve-seat; Fig. 3, a similar view of the valve; Fig. 4, a plan view of the lower end of the cylinder; Fig. 5, a similar view of the lower valve, and Fig. 6 a partial sectional detail taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
The present inventionhas relation to certain new'and useful improvements in double-acting submerged force-pumps and it consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the pump-cylinder, havin ginterior screwthreads upon its lower end for attaching thereto a perforated valve-seat, B, and a central hole to receive a guide-pin, a, for the valve C.
Within the cylinder A works a hollow pistonrod, D, which extends up through a head, E, and cap F, the latter having connected thereto an operating rod or lever, b. The head E is provided with an exterior screw-threaded ilange, c, for engaging with interior screw-threads upon theupper end of the pumpcylinder A. The upper portion of the head E is cast or lotherwise provided with an interior screwthreaded iiange or rim, d, with which engages the screw-threaded ilange e of the cap F. The head E is also cast with a valve-seat, f, having inlets g, which communicate with the chamber G, formed by the flanges d e between the cap and head, a valve, H, controlling the inlets g. The lower end of the hollow piston-rod D is screwthreaded, and has connected thereto a tubular piston-section, I, which passes loosely through the plunger-head K, consisting of the two sections M and packing lc, of leather or other suitable material. The tubular section I,nearits 11pclosing tightly against the under side of the' plunger-head K, which forms a seat therefor. The water is forced from the upper part of the cylinder down and through the upper perforations, l, and up the hollow piston-rod DI. The pressure of water in the well causes the valve O to rise, which opens the perforations in the valve-seat B, and thus allows the water to enter the cylinder A and ll that portion 'thereof below the plunger-head K. The cylinder A having completed its downward stroke, the valve C closes, and on its upward stroke carries with it the plunger-head K, and, as the head strikes the under side of the valve M, closes the perforations Z and opens the perforations m, the water being forced from the lower part of the cylinder through the perforations m andi up the piston-rod D. The pressure of thewater in the well causes the valve H to rise, and allows the water to pass into the chamberG through inlets g, and thence down through openings n in the valve-seat f, which fills that portion of the cylinderA above the plunger-head K. The pins p, which pass through the valve H, are to prevent it from turning. Y 4 I am aware that submerged-pump cylinders have been provided with a removable cap, forming an annular chamber between the cap and the end ofthe cylinder, which latter forms a seat for a valve confined between the end of the cylinder and the cap to regulate ports formed in the end of the cylinder, and do not claim such, for where the peculiarity consists in the construction of the cylinder, as in the above case, the production ofthe same is at a much higher cost, comparatively, than my device, where the peculiarity of construction is solely in the head, which latter can be producedy cheaply and used in connection with any cylinder or tube.-

in combination with a hollow piston-rod and plunger-head, as and for the purposes set forth.
