PUMP-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,438, dated June 28, 1881. Application filed November 8, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACKSON H. DUNLAP, of Turlock, county of Stanislaus, and State of California, have invented an Improved Valve for Pumps; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to valves for pumps; and it consists of a lower elongated cylinder, constituting the lower valve, punctured with holes to admit water freely, and moving its length within a plate having an elevated valveseat, whereby a tight fit is effected, and an upper valve, consisting of a similar cylinder,
"having four oblong or elongated holes for the escape of the water, and moving up and down within appropriate casing, being limited by a cross-pin or otherwise, all of which will hereinafter more-fully appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure is a View of my invention, partially in cross-section and partially in elevation.
Let A represent the pump-cylinder having the flange W, to which is bolted the plate B, packing being placed between them to form a water-tight joint. The plate B has a hole in its center, around which, on the upper surface, is the elevated valve-seat D. Within the central openings in plate B is the elongated cylinder or valve E, fitting loosely, so as to allow it to rise or fall. This cylindrical valve E is provided with the small holes 6, to admit water freely, and serving as a screen. Its lower end has the packing F, made of pieces of leather and secured by a ring, H, held in place by the transverse pin I. Its upper end has the cap J, next to which is the packing K, for fitting the elongated valve-seat D on the plate B.
Let L represent the piston of the pump, having the down wardly-projeoting rods M threaded, as shown. On these rods M, I fit a ring, N, having an elevated valve-seat, O, on its upper side. The leather packing P fits over the arms M, and is held in place by the ring R, which presses it up closely to the ring N. The ring R is secured by the nuts S. Within these two rings and packing the cylinder or valve T fits loosely, so as to be raised and lowered. This valve is secured within its casing, either by a block above,as shown,or bya pin through its lower end. It is provided with the four elongated holes or apertures, I), as shown. Its top has a cap, U, and next to it the packing V, for fitting upon the valve-seat O on the ring N, and its lower end is open.
The operation of my valves will be as follows: The lower cylinder-valve, E, will rest upon its seat D on the plate B. WVhen the piston L is drawp up the upper cylinder-valve, T, will rest upon its seat 0, thus creating a vacuum below, which will cause the water to force up the lower valve, E, and the water will flow in through its open end and through the small holes 0 into the pump-cylinder. When the piston is forced down the lower valve, E, falls down and the upper valve, T, is raised, when the water flows through the oblong apertures 12 into the cylinder. The ring or band H, securing the lower valve, E, serves to prevent sand from coming in contact with the outside of the tube, thus preventing speedy wear. valve-seats and the packing serve to make a close fit by keeping dirt from collecting in the joints.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The plate B, having a central opening surrounded by an upwardly-projecting rib, D, in combination with the cylindrical perforated valve E, having its lower end open and its upper end closed by a head, J, and provided with ringH and packing F, as set forth.
2. The plunger L, provided with downwardly-projecting rods M M, carrying plate R, and ring N, with central opening, surrounded by a rib, O, in combination with the short cylinder T, having its lower end open and its upper end closed by a head, U, and provided with a series of slots, 1), all constructed, arranged, and operated as set forth.
