IMPROVEMENT IN Pls'roNs FOR FORGE-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,702, dated October 2l, 1862.

This invention consists in constructing the piston with two water-passages and a valvechamber, the latter being provided with a ball-valve and communicating with a tubular piston-rod, all being arranged in such a manner and in connection with the pump-cylinder, which is provided with suitable valves, so as to throw a continuous stream.
The object of the invention is to simplify and economize in the construction of forcepumps, and at the same time augment their efficiency by a perfect working of parts, which will not be liable to become deranged by use. I
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I willV proceed to describe it.
A represents a cylinder, which is divided by partitions c into three compartments, b, b', land c. The compartment c is at-the center of the cylinder, and is closed at its bottom, but communicates at its upper end with the tubular piston-rod B, which is screwed into the upper end of said compartment, as'
plainly shown in the drawing. The compartment c is the valvechamber, provided at two opposite points with openings d d', which are closed alternately by the valve C, the latter being spherical Vand sufficiently smaller in diameter than the chamber c to admit of a free passage of water through c from one opening, d or d', when the other is closed. The opening d forms a communication between the chamber c and the compartment b, while the other opening, d', forms a communication between c and the compartment b', the latter, b', communicating with the pumpcylinder at the bottom of cylinder A, and the former, b, communicating with the pump cylinder at the upper end -of cylinder A. The cylinder A is the piston, and it is fitted within the pumplcylinder, (shown in red, and designated by D,)'said cylinder being provided with a vertical side water-passage, E, having a valve, F, opening upward in its bottom, and communicating at its upper end with the upper end of the pumpcylinder D, as shown at e. rlhe bottom of the pump-cylinder D is also provided with a valve, f, opening upward. The piston A is fitted watertight in the pump-cylinder D, and is allowed to Work freely up and down therein. W'hen the piston rises, a suction is of course formed in the lower `part of the pumpcyliuder D, the valve f openingand the water passing through it, while the water in the pumpcylinder above the piston A passes down through the compartment b, through opening d, into chamber c, and thence up through the tubularpiston-rod B. (Seeblack arrows.) When ythe piston descends, the valve f closes, and a suction is produced in the upper part of the pump-cylinder above the piston and in the water-passage E, the valve F opening up-` ward,'aud the water passing u p through E into the upper part of D. vThe spherical or ball valve C is operated by the action of the water, the former closing the opening d and Vcutting off the communication between 'c and b as the piston ascends. and as the latter descends closing the opening d and cutting oft the communication between c and b, space,
as previously alluded to, being allowed be-` tween the ball-valve C and the opening which is not closed by the latter, to admit ofthe free passage'of the water up through c into the tubular piston-rod B. Thus by this simpleJ arrangement a very eticient forcepump is obtained, and one which is not 1iable to become deranged by use or to get out of repair.
I would remark that the lower horizontal partition, a, ou which the valve G rests, is made detachable in any proper way to admit of the insertion ofthe valve C in thechamber c, and its removal therefrom when necessary.
