SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,490, dated October 18, 1881.

To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MILLER, of Plymouth,in the countyof Marshall and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in double-acting force-pumps; and it consists in the combination ofdevices, which will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby a doubleacting piston and cylinder are applied to the side of a straight stock without changing the straight litre of the stock or in any mannerinterfering therewith further than to place a partition in the stock opposite the lower portion of the cylinder. The object of my invention is to construct a cylinder which can be applied directly to the side of the straight stock without in any manner changing or altering the stock further than to insert a partition in it at a certain point, thus enabling me to convert any single-acting pump into a double-acting one.

A represents a common straight stock, such as is used in all single-acting pumps. Secured to the side of this stock, at any suitable point, is the cylinderB, in which the valveless piston (J is operated by means of any suitable mechanism secured to the upper part of the stock. In the stock A, opposite the lowerend of this cylinder, is placed a suitable partition, D, which serves to turn therising water from the stock into the lower part of the cylinder as the piston is worked back and forth. Just above this partition a valve-port, F, is made, and through the upper end of the cylinder a second valve-port, G, is made, and through these two ports the water is forced by the piston into the stock above the cylinder, so as to be forced constantly upward. The partition D extends horizontally outward from the inner side of the stock into the cylinder, beyond the bore I of the cylinder, and between the lower part of the cylinder and this partition the water-passage J is formed.

In the outer side of the cylinder a vertical water-way, L, is formed, and from this waterway are madethe two valved ports 0, through which the water is alternately drawn into the bore of the cylinder. As the piston is drawn upward the water is drawn up through the stock into the lower part of the cylinder and through the lower valved port, 0, into the lower part of the bore of the cylinder, and then, when the piston is forced downward, the lower valved port, 0, is closed and the upper one opened, so that the water will be drawn from the vertical water-way L into the top of the bore of the cylinder. While the piston is being forced downward all of thewater that was drawn into the cylinder in its upward stroke is forced through the lower valve passage-way. into the stock, and as the piston rises all of the water which was drawn into the bore upon the pistons down ward stroke is forced through the upper valve passage-way into the stock, and thus the water is alternately drawn into and forced from the opposite end of the bore of the piston in the usual manner.
By means of the construction here shown it will .be seen that a cylinder thus constructed can be applied to the straight stock of any single-acting pump, so that it can be converted into a double-acting one, as described.
I am aware that a cylinder has been placed between two stocks, or two parts of one, and this I disclaim. My invention differs from this in the application ofadouble-acting cylinder to a straight stock.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim- The combination of a straight stock having the partition I) inserted in it, with a cylinder having a bore for the piston, and a water-passage, L, with suitable valves, whereby a double-actin g force-pum p is formed, substantially as shown and described.
