STEAM-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,412, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed May 17, 1890. Serial No. 352,179. (No model.)
To 60% whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANFORTH H. ROYCE and CYRUS TUFTS, citizens of the United States. residing at Columbus, in the county 5 of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Pumps; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others no skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention has relation to improvements in steam-pumps; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as
I5 hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The objects of our invention are to provide a steam-pump of simple and inexpensive con- 2 struction, that is perfectly noiseless when in operation, and in which the use of auxiliary valves, tappets, and valve-rods are dispensed with; and in carrying out our invention we proceed as follows, reference being bad to the 5 drawings for a better understanding of the details of construction and operation of the parts, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a steam-pump embodying our improve- 3 ments; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line y y, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view of the screwhead of the cold-water-valve chest; Fig. at, a sectional view on the line a: a: of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, the letter A designates the frame of the pump, having secured thereto in any desired manner at one end the steam-cylinder B, carrying the steam- 4 chest 0, and at its opposite end the watercylinder D and valve-chest E, all of the usual well-known construction.
As the particularconstruction of the steam pumping engine is not claimed herein, but
will form the subject-matter of a separate application for patent, a detail description thereof is unnecessary in this application.
The letter F indicates the piston-rod passing through stuflingboxes g g, formed on the heads of the steam and water cylinders, and carries at one end the piston-head and at its opposite end the water piston or sucker G, of any preferred construction.
H and II indicate the induction and eduction ports in the water end of the pump, which communicate with the valve-chest, as shown; and I indicates the valve located within said chest and is provided with alongitndinal recess t', in which fits one end of a set-screw z", passing through the side of the valvc'chest, and prevents said valve from revolvingwhen the pump is in operation.
In order that water may be discharged against the ends of the valve 1, thereby insuring its working, we provide the water- 6 5 valve chest at each end with heads J, provided with ports j and firm auxiliary inductionports j communicating with said heads, as shown in Fig. 1; and to prevent the slamming of the valve I against the heads J we place 7c at each end of the valve-chest rubber cushions K, and in order that said rubber cushions may be held in place against the action of the valve, a tight-fitting sleeve is placed in the valve-chest abutting against the rubber cushions and provided with ports registering with the ports in the valve-chest;
The pump is provided with the usual steam, suction, and discharge pipes closed by suitable valves;and to readily permit of the pump being drained when not in operation, petcocks L are placed inthe bottom of the steam and water cylinders, as shown in Fig. 1. \We do not desire to limit ourselves to the precise construction herein shown and described, as many changes may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
