Description

UNITED STATES `PATRICK DOYLE, OF NEVI OOMERSTOVN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM PUMPING-ENGINES.
Speciiieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,. 72, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom Iit may colmena:
Be it known that I, lA'rRiCK DOYLE, o' Neve Oomerstown, in the county ot' lusearawas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in Steam VPumping-flngincs5 and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exaet deseription tln'ereof, whieh will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bein had to the aceompan yin drawin forming' part of this speeitieation.
rIhis invention relates to a new and useful improvement in steam-pumps; and consists in the mode oi connecting' the valves and valve-seats with the pump, and in. the arrangement and combination ot' parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying' drawing, Figure lV represents a vertical longitiulinal seetionot the Awhole apparatus, taken on the line .r .1; of' Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate correspon din parts.
A is the pump-eylinder. der. O is the steam-ehest. l) is the steam-valve. E is the valve-rod. Fis the steanrpiston. is the pump-piston. II is a common piston-rod, to the end ot' wliieh the pistons F and G- are attached, as represented in the drawing. 1 is an arm on the piston-rod. J .I are adjustable tappets on the valve-rod. The steam-valve l) is operated by means of' the arm striking the tappet at each stroke ot' the engine. K represents the valves, and L the valve-seat plates ot.' the pump, arranged 3 is th'e steam-cylinto operate in the Water-cliambers M N, as seen in Fig'. l. rIhe valveseat ofthe pump is on the an guiar plate I1, with the valve Working upon its horizontal 1 ortion,to which portion th c valvefcage Ois attached. The angular pla-te is fastened in the position seen in the drawin bythe scre\\heads or buttons lt. NVhen the buttons are turned so as to release the upright portion oi' the plate the entire plate, with the valve, .may be drawn out for repairs or other purposes. The valveseat plates forni partitions in the water-ehambers, so that the water is tbreed (when the piston moves) as indicated bythe arrows. By this arrangement of the valves and seats it will be seen that any one oi" the valves and seats may be removed for grindingI or cleaning, or partly removed for lettin olif the water in ireezing weather, or for other purposes. The horizontal portion of the valveplate projects as seen at S, with an oriiieeforihe hand in the )1'o iecting portion for facilitating the removal ot' the plate and valves. v
Havingi thus described my invention,` I elaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The angular valve-plate L, forming the valveseat and supporting the valve, and made removable, in combination with a pumping-eiigine, substantially as and for the purposes described.
