WILLIAM DANGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOUBLE-ACTING STEAMJTALVE.
Application filed February 4, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Steam- Engines.
My invention relates to valves for steam engines and like structures.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a construction of valve by the use of which the efiiciency of the engine may be increased, in that the steam is permitted to enter the engine cylinder without throttling.
Stated in general terms the invention embodies a separable valve, the parts of which are adapted, by suit-able mechanism, to be separated and moved into close contact with each other for the purpose of admitting steam to, and cutting the same off from, the engine cylinder.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical view through an engine cylinder and steam chest, the valve being shown in position to close communication between the cylinder and steam chest; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view, the top plate of the steam chest being removed, and the parts of the valve being shown in position to allow the passage of steam to the engine cylinder from the steam chest.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, a designates a fragment of a steam-engine cylinder, adapted to communicate through the feed-port (Z with the steam chest 6. Steam is supplied to the steam chest 6, through the pipe cl which is in communication with a suitable source of steam. Slidable in the steam chest I) is the two part valve 0, c, the inner ends of these valve parts being adapted to contact or close directly over the center of the feed-port cl.
The valve partc is connected to the valve stem 0 and the valve part c to the valve stem 0 When the cam-slide e, actuated by the cam-rod f, is drawn downward, it grips the
arm 9 which is securely fastened upon the valve-stem c by means of the nut i and draws the valve-slide 0 outward in one direct-ion, and by means of the connecting-rod Specification of Letters Patent.

h and the lever j, and the slot and pin connection 0", 0 between lever and stem 0 draws the valve-slide 0 outward in the opposite direction. thus clearing the feed-port cl twice as quickly as does the form of valve which has only one slide drawing away from the extreme side of the feed-port across to the other. As the valve is again closed after the piston of the engine reaches the exhaust port, and must remain closed until the piston reaches the top of'its backward stroke, the remainder of the stroke of the cam-rod f and the cam-slide 6 must be given to lost motion. Therefore the valve-stem 0 is provided with an adjusting nut 0 designed to hold the valve-slides in their respective positions, and to act as a brace for the spring 0 upon which the said lost motion of the cam-rod and cam-slide is allowed to cushion, the spring forcing the valveslides cc firmly together to prevent any possible premature flow of steam into the cylinder.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an engine cylinder having a steam port, and a steam chest adapted to communicate with said cylinder through said port, of a valve in said steam chest, said valve comprising two sections adapted to be moved into contact with each other directly over said port to close the same, and away from each other to open said port.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with an engine cylinder having a steam port, and a steam chest adapted to communicate with said cylinder through said port, of a sectional twopart valve arranged in said steam chest, and means for simultaneously moving the sections of said valve tightly into contact with each other directly over said port or away from each other to respectively close and open said steam port.
