Description

H. I. HOYT.
Valves for Steam Engines.
No. 142,788, v PatentedSeptemherlG,1873.
NR \M I" UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
HENRY ISAAC HOYT, OF NORWALK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN VALVES FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,788, dated September 16, 1873 application filed December 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY ISAAC HoYT, of Norwalk, Fairfield county, and State 0t Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valves for Steam-Engines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, andthe letters of reference marked thereon, in which the same letter represents the same thing in each figure.
Figurelisacut section of myimproved valve applied to a direct-acting steampump.
A represents the steam-chest; B, the cushion-cylinder; C, its piston; D,the main valve; E, the steam-jacket; f, the main steam-inlet; g g, the air-cocks; h, the main exhaust-pipe; t t, small ports in end of main valve; j j, grooves around the main valve, communicating with small ports t 'i; k k, safety-ports opening into the exhaust to prevent steam passing back of the piston; M M, steam-passages from main cylinder; 0 0, main steam-ports; 1910, main exhaust-ports.
The object of my invention is to secure a simple and compact means of arresting a piston-valve, moved partly by a tappet-arm or other mechanical contrivance, and partly by placed at varying distances (about an inch) from the extreme end of the cylinder. As main valve D moves forward its rod moves cushion-piston C over the port of air-cock 9, closing it and confining the air beyond within the remaining space of cylinder B, the resistance of which confined air arrests its motion.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of cylinder 13, piston C,
air-cock g, valve D, jacket E, and steani-pas- V sages and ports 6, 7c, M, O, and p, constructed and operating together substantially as described.
HENRY ISAAC HOYT. I/Vitnes'ses:
